More on the Magnus-Derek game

چکیده
We consider the so called Magnus-Derek game, which is a two-person game played on a round table with n positions. The two players are called Magnus and Derek. Initially there is a token placed at position 0. In each round Magnus chooses a positive integer m ≤ n/2 as the distance of the targeted position from his current position for the token to move, and Derek decides a direction, clockwise or counterclockwise, to move the token. The goal of Magnus is to maximize the total number of positions visited, while Derek’s is to minimize this number. If both players play optimally, we prove that Magnus, the maximizer, can achieve his goal in O(n) rounds, which improves a previous result with O(n logn) rounds. Then we consider a modified version of Magnus-Derek game, where one of the players reveals his moves in advance and the other player plays optimally. In this case we prove that it is NP-hard for Derek to achieve his goal if Magnus reveals his moves in advance. On the other hand, Magnus has an advantage to occupy all positions. We also consider the circumstance that both players play randomly, and we show that the expected time to visit all positions is O(n log n).

The Magnus-Derek game in groups
The Magnus-Derek game (also called the maximal variant of the vector game), introduced by Nedev and Muthukrishnan is the following: a token is moved around a table with n positions. In each round of the game Magnus chooses a number and then Derek chooses a direction (clockwise or counterclockwise), and the token moves that many positions into that direction. The goal of Magnus is to maximize th...
متن کاملThe Magnus-Derek game
We introduce a new combinatorial game between two players: Magnus and Derek. Initially, a token is placed at position 0 on a round table with n positions. In each round of the game Magnus chooses the number of positions for the token to move, and Derek decides in which direction, + (clockwise) or − (counterclockwise), the token will be moved. Magnus aims to maximize the total number of position...
متن کاملAn O(n)-Round Strategy for the Magnus-Derek Game
We analyze further the Magnus-Derek game, a two-player game played on a round table with n positions. The players jointly control the movement of a token. One player, Magnus, aims to maximize the number of positions visited while minimizing the number of rounds. The other player, Derek, attempts to minimize the number of visited positions. We present a new strategy for Magnus that succeeds in v...

Background and Purpose: Cryptococcus. magnus is a non-Cryptococcus neoformans species isolated from certain plants, soil, air, and arctic glaciers. Case report: This report describes a case of a 23-year-old Iranian female with pruritus and vaginal irritation. Conventional tests and molecular analysis of the samples of vaginal discharge were performed. The mentioned analyses revealed Cryptoc...
متن کاملNitric oxide in the nucleus raphe magnus modulates cutaneous blood flow in rats during hypothermia
Objective(s): Nucleus Raphe Magnus (NRM) that is involved in the regulation of body temperature contains nitric oxide (NO) synthase. Considering the effect of NO on skin blood flow control, in this study, we assessed its thermoregulatory role within the raphe magnus. Materials and Methods: To this end, tail blood flow of male Wistar rats was measured by laser doppler following the induction of ...
