If the liver graft is exactly procured from the living donor at the same time, it is impossible to transplant this graft to the intended recipient; this liver graft is called an “orphan graft” [3] The appropriate allocation of the orphan graft requires special consideration and raises several important questions. Herein, we report on the outcomes of two orphan grafts that were no longer transplanted to the intended recipients. There are no set rules for how to manage these situations.

Heterotopic Ossification around the Knee after Internal Fixation of a Complex Tibial Plateau Fracture Combined with the Use of Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBM): A Case Report
Demineralized bone matrix has been successfully commercialized as an alternative bone graft material that not only can function as filler but also as an osteoinductive graft. Numerous studies have confirmed its beneficial use in clinical practice. Heterotopic ossification after internal fixation combined with the use of demineralized bone matrix has not been widely reported. In this paper we de...

BACKGROUND Full-thickness skin graft (FTSG) is a very versatile tool regularly used in small sizes. With the established knowledge of the graft take through the margins as well as wound bed, we extended the use of the FTSG for reconstruction of large-sized defects with satisfactory results. METHODS We presented our experience in wound reconstruction using FTSG in 28 patients. We select...
متن کاملAre payers treating orphan drugs differently?
BACKGROUND Some orphan drugs can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars annually per patient. As a result, payer sensitivity to the cost of orphan drugs is rising, particularly in light of increased numbers of new launches in recent years. In this article, we examine payer coverage in the United States, England and Wales, and the Netherlands of outpatient orphan drugs approved between 1983 and 2...
متن کاملThe Detectability of Orphan Afterglows
The realization that GRBs release a constant amount of energy implies that the post jet-break afterglow evolution would be largely universal. For a given redshift all afterglows should be detected up to a fixed observer angle. We estimate the observed magnitude and the implied detectability of orphan afterglows. We show that for reasonable limiting magnitudes (mlim = 25) orphan afterglows would...
متن کاملOrphan drugs: expensive yet necessary.
Whether the prices of certain orphan treatments are justified is highly controversial. One argument is that such therapies should not be funded through the public purse or private health plans because a patient with a rare disease requires more than their 'fair share' of a limited health care budget. Orphan medications can also be denied because they fare poorly in the cost-effectiveness assess...
