چکیده

The proposed distinction between perceptual and conceptual skill-learning tasks was tested. Eighty participants were administered a cued recall task and two priming tasks, one perceptual (partial word identification) and one conceptual (category production). Two skill-learning task were administered as well, one putative perceptual (mirror reading) and the other putative conceptual (Tower of Hanoi puzzle). Each task was performed by half of the participants under a full attention condition, and by the other half under a divided attention condition. Consistent with previous reports in the literature, divided attention did not interfere with the perceptual priming task, but did interfere with the conceptual priming and cued recall tasks. Dissociation was also observed for the skill-learning tasks. Divided attention did not affect either baseline performance or learning rate on the mirror reading task. However, on the Tower of Hanoi puzzle, divided attention did interfere with baseline performance, but contrary to prediction it did not interfere with learning rate. The differential effect of divided attention on the baseline performance in these two tasks was interpreted as supporting the distinction between conceptual and perceptual skill-learning tasks.

The Impact of Skill Integration on Task Involvement Load

The present study investigated whether word learning and retention in a second language are contingent upon a task's involvement load, i.e., the amount of need, search, and evaluation the task imposes. Laufer and Hulstijn (2001) contend that tasks with higher degrees of these three components induce higher involvement load, and are, therefore, more effective for word learning. To test this clai...

Attentional requirements during acquisition and consolidation of a skill in normal readers and developmental dyslexics.

OBJECTIVE Previous research demonstrated that individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD) may suffer from a deficit in the acquisition stage of a new skill, whereas consolidation processes seem to be preserved. The present study was designed to examine whether this impaired acquisition was attributable to a lack of automatization, and whether the reported preserved consolidation was attributab...

The Impact of Structured Input-based Tasks on L2 Learners’ Grammar Learning

Abstract Task-based language teaching has received increased attention in second language research. However, the combination of structured input-based approach and task-based language teaching has not been examined in relation to L2 grammar learning. To address this gap, the present study investigated how the structured input-based tasks with and without explicit information impacted learners’ ...
