Effects of Nanoscale Clustering in Amorphous Carbon

چکیده
In this review the effects of clustering associated with the sp and sp phases of amorphous carbon thin films are examined. We highlight that many of the optical and electronic properties of these films can be explained by consideration of disorder in the sp phase. Within the context of topological and structural disorder, we explain the variation of the visible Raman line width, Raman shift, Tauc gap and Urbach energy as a function of deposition conditions. We further go on to describe how intra-sp cluster interactions are responsible for the narrowing of the electron paramagnetic resonance line width with increasing spin density and how this intracluster interaction can be extended to the intercluster transport properties, in particular, for electron field emission from the films. We also examine how the mechanical properties of carbon films are affected by clustering which can be enhanced by thermal annealing.

Effect of Carbon Nanotube Geometries on Mechanical Properties of Nanocomposite Via Nanoscale Representative Volume Element
Predicting the effective elastic properties of carbon nanotube-reinforced nanocomposites is of great interest to many structural designers and engineers for improving material and configuration design in recent years. In this paper, a finite element model of a CNT composite has been developed using the Representative volume element (RVE) to evaluate the effective material properties of nanocomp...
متن کاملPhysical Properties of Reactively Sputter-Deposited C-N Thin Films
This work aims to prepare and study amorphous carbon nitride (CNx) films. Films were deposited by reactive magnetron radiofrequency (RF) sputtering from graphite target in argon and nitrogen mixture discharge at room temperature. The ratio of the gas flow rate was varied from 0.1 to 1. Deposited films were found to be amorphous. Highest Nitrogen concentration achieved was 42 atomic percent whic...
متن کاملInvestigation of hydrogen plasma treatment for reducing defects in silicon quantum dot superlattice structure with amorphous silicon carbide matrix
We investigate the effects of hydrogen plasma treatment (HPT) on the properties of silicon quantum dot superlattice films. Hydrogen introduced in the films efficiently passivates silicon and carbon dangling bonds at a treatment temperature of approximately 400°C. The total dangling bond density decreases from 1.1 × 1019 cm-3 to 3.7 × 1017 cm-3, which is comparable to the defect density of typic...
متن کاملNanosized graphene crystallite induced strong magnetism in pure carbon films.
We report strong magnetism in pure carbon films grown by electron irradiation assisted physical vapor deposition in electron cyclotron resonance plasma. The development of graphene nanocrystallites in the amorphous film matrix, and the dependence of the magnetic behavior on amorphous, nanocrystallite and graphite-like structures were investigated. Results were that the amorphous structure shows...
متن کاملMAGNETISATION AND ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE STUDIES OF TETRAHEDRAL AMORPHOUS CARBON
The magnetisation and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum of two specimens of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), deposited from a filtered cathodic arc, were measured over a wide temperature range. The magnetisation was found to consist of superparamagnetic, paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions. The superparamagnetic contribution resembled that recently found in carbon prepared from ...
