Automatic Recognition of Theme, Focus and Contrastive Stress
نویسندگان
چکیده
Theme, focus and contrastive stress are categories which are necessary for the solution of several problems in NLP, including word order determination, scope recognition and anaphora resolution. However, they largely depend on the context, and analysing the discourse structure of a text is di cult and time-consuming. As context has an impact on the order of constituents in context-embedded sentences, it is possible in many cases to identify theme, focus and stress at a sentential level without referring to the context. This paper describes the complex German word order mechanism and presents an algorithm to identify the three categories automatically. With certain language-speci c changes, this algorithm can be applied to other languages than German.

Errors, Repetition, and Contrastive Emphasis in Speech Recognition
In repeating an utterance for the benefit of a listener, talkers can use contrastive stress to mark those parts of an utterance that were misrecognized. In this study, we found that talkers use a consistent set of markers to indicate contrastive stress: Listeners unaware of the nature of the misrecognition can readily identify a contrastively stressed word. Based on an analysis of these markers...
متن کاملA Contrastive Study of Theme in English and Azerbaijani Turkish Fictional Texts
Thematisationis one of the troublesome areas both for translation purposes from or into English and also for learning EFL. The main reason for the problem lies in the fact that usually different languages structure thematisation in different ways. Therefore, the present research is an attempt to investigate contrastively: experiential (topical), interpersonal and textual themes in a sample of A...
متن کاملEffects of Focus Type and Argument Length on the Dative Alternation
The arguments of English double object verbs appear in the dative form (ex: “Give the sailor the cup.”) or the PP-frame (ex: “Give the cup to the sailor.”). Constructions with flexible word order have attracted attention in existing psycholinguistic research on language production (see eg. [1], [2], [3]), as researchers have investigated what influences the likelihood of a speaker producing one...

This study explored the effect of contrastive phrase resynthesis instruction ongaining the teachability hypothesis stages in self-paced versus time-constrained oralproduction and recognition. Three groups (i.e., 23 learners) of high beginner femalelearners in an English language institute were randomly selected from a cohort oflearners. One group received contrastive metalinguistic instruction ...
متن کاملThe Prosody of Contrastive Topic and Focus in Spoken English
On the one hand, these different researchers differ from each other in identifying exactly what the prosodic correlate of topic/theme is. Büring (2002: 27) and Kadmon (2001: 380), following Pierrehumbert (1980), suggest that ‘contrastive topics’ are realized by an entire tune, either H* LH% or L+H*LH%. Steedman (2000) associates his ‘theme’ with the pitch accent L+H*. Gundel & Fretheim (in pres...
