چکیده

Direct-search methods are a class of popular derivative-free algorithms characterized by evaluating the objective function using a step size and a number of (polling) directions. When applied to the minimization of smooth functions, the polling directions are typically taken from positive spanning sets which in turn must have at least n+1 vectors in an n-dimensional variable space. In addition, to ensure the global convergence of these algorithms, the positive spanning sets used throughout the iterations are required to be uniformly non-degenerate in the sense of having a positive (cosine) measure bounded away from zero. However, recent numerical results indicated that randomly generating the polling directions without imposing the positive spanning property can improve the performance of these methods, especially when the number of directions is chosen considerably less than n+ 1. In this paper, we analyze direct-search algorithms when the polling directions are probabilistic descent, meaning that with a certain probability at least one of them is of descent type. Such a framework enjoys almost-sure global convergence. More interestingly, we will show a global decaying rate of 1/ √ k for the gradient size, with overwhelmingly high probability, matching the corresponding rate for the deterministic versions of the gradient method or of direct search. Our analysis helps to understand numerical behavior and the choice of the number of polling directions.

Direct search based on probabilistic feasible descent for bound and linearly constrained problems

Direct search is a methodology for derivative-free optimization whose iterations are characterized by evaluating the objective function using a set of polling directions. In deterministic direct search applied to smooth objectives, these directions must somehow conform to the geometry of the feasible region and typically consist of positive generators of approximate tangent cones (which then re...

Probabilistic Line Searches for Stochastic Optimization

In deterministic optimization problems, line search routines are a standard tool ensuring stability and efficiency. In the stochastic setting, no direct equivalent has so far been formulated, because uncertain gradients do not allow for a strict sequence of decisions collapsing the search space. We construct a probabilistic version of the line search paradigm, by combining the structure of exis...

Complexity and global rates of trust-region methods based on probabilistic models

Trust-region algorithms have been proved to globally converge with probability one when the accuracy of the trust-region models is imposed with a certain probability conditioning on the iteration history. In this paper, we study their complexity, providing global rates and worst case complexity bounds on the number of iterations (with overwhelmingly high probability), for both first and second ...

A Probabilistic Algorithm for Optimal Control Problem

In this paper we present a direct method for the numerical solution of the constrained optimal control problem when the gradient information is not available. At this aim, a new control parameterization based on Bernstein basis functions is suggested to convert control problem into nonlinear programing problem (NLP), and then a recently proposed stochastic algorithm called Probabilistic Global ...

A Free Line Search Steepest Descent Method for Solving Unconstrained Optimization Problems

In this paper, we solve unconstrained optimization problem using a free line search steepest descent method. First, we propose a double parameter scaled quasi Newton formula for calculating an approximation of the Hessian matrix. The approximation obtained from this formula is a positive definite matrix that is satisfied in the standard secant relation. We also show that the largest eigen value...
