Prenatal diagnosis of Caudal Regression Syndrome : a case report
نویسندگان
چکیده
BACKGROUND: Caudal regression is a rare syndrome which has a spectrum of congenital malformations ranging from simple anal atresia to absence of sacral, lumbar and possibly lower thoracic vertebrae, to the most severe form which is known as sirenomelia. Maternal diabetes, genetic predisposition and vascular hypoperfusion have been suggested as possible causative factors. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of caudal regression syndrome diagnosed in utero at 22 weeks' of gestation. Prenatal ultrasound examination revealed a sudden interruption of the spine and "frog-like" position of lower limbs. Termination of pregnancy and autopsy findings confirmed the diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis of caudal regression syndrome is possible at 22 weeks' of gestation by ultrasound examination.

BACKGROUND Caudal regression syndrome is a rare, neural tube defect characterized by an abnormal development of the caudal aspect of the vertebral column and the spinal cord., It results in neurological deficits ranging from bladder and bowel involvement to severe sensory and motor deficits in the lower limbs. Maternal diabetes, genetic factors and some teratogens have been shown to be associat...
متن کاملPrenatal diagnosis of caudal regression syndrome and omphalocele in a fetus of a diabetic mother
The caudal regression syndrome is defined as total or partial agenesis of the sacrum and lumbar spine, frequently associated with other developmental malformations (orthopedic, neurological, genito-urinary, gastrointestinal…). Prenatal diagnosis is possible through fetal ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A case of fetal caudal regression syndrome with omphalocele from a diab...
متن کاملPrenatal Evidence of Persistent Notochord and Absent Sacrum Caused by a Mutation in the T (Brachyury) Gene
Caudal regression syndrome (CRS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by developmental abnormalities of caudal spinal segments. To date, the etiology of CRS is unclear; sporadic cases are strongly associated with maternal diabetes, while familiar recurrence is infrequent. We describe in detail the prenatal clinical and sonographic findings of a recently described hereditary caudal regres...
متن کاملSonographic diagnosis of caudal regression in the first trimester of pregnancy.
audal regression syndrome (CRS) represents a continuum of congenital anomalies that may include incomplete development of the sacrum and, to a lesser extent, the lumbar vertebrae, disruption of the distal spinal cord, and extreme lack of growth of the caudal region.1 First-trimester prenatal diagnosis of CRS is challenging because of incomplete ossification of the sacrum at that time.2 Most cas...
