چکیده

The Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine, Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) is a clinical terminology with a broad coverage of health care, which has been developed with the help of a rather inexpressive description logic dialect known as EL [1]. The advantage of using a description logic (DL) for defining a medical ontology is that, instead of error-prone “hierarchy engineering,” where each newly introduced concept needs to be manually positioned at the right place in the concept hierarchy, one adds a definition of the new concept to the knowledge base and the DL reasoner then automatically finds the right position of this concept in the concept hierarchy. The advantage of using an inexpressive DL is that classification (i.e., the computation of the concept hierarchy) is fast even for a very large ontology like SNOMED CT. Efficient reasoners for EL, like Snorocket, which is based on the classification algorithm introduced in [2], can classify SNOMED CT in less than a minute.

Replacing SEP-Triplets in SNOMED CT Using Tractable Description Logic Operators

Reification of parthood relations according to the SEP-triplet encoding pattern has been employed in the clinical terminology SNOMED CT to simulate transitivity of the part-of relation via transitivity of the is-a relation and to inherit properties along part-of links. In this paper we argue that using a more expressive representation language, which allows for a direct representation of the re...

Learning Formal Definitions for Snomed CT from Text

Snomed CT is a widely used medical ontology which is formally expressed in a fragment of the Description Logic EL++. The underlying logics allow for expressive querying, yet make it costly to maintain and extend the ontology. Existing approaches for ontology generation mostly focus on learning superclass or subclass relations and therefore fail to be used to generate Snomed CT definitions. In t...

Towards Converting Clinical Phrases into SNOMED CT Expressions

Converting information contained in natural language clinical text into computer-amenable structured representations can automate many clinical applications. As a step towards that goal, we present a method which could help in converting novel clinical phrases into new expressions in SNOMED CT, a standard clinical terminology. Since expressions in SNOMED CT are written in terms of their relatio...

Projection and Inheritance of SNOMED CT Relations between MeSH Terms

This paper proposes a methodology to achieve the automatic inheritance of SNOMED CT relations applied to MeSH preferred terms using UMLS as knowledge source server. We propose an interoperability wildcard to achieve this objective. A quantitative and a qualitative analysis were performed on top four SNOMED CT relations inherited between MeSH preferred terms. A total of 12,030 couples of MeSH pr...
