Overcondence, Social Groups, and Gender

Previous research indicates that economic agents believe that they perform better than others in a variety of environments. This paper investigates whether or not a similar phenomenon exists for social groups. Students from ten di¤erent student organizations were recruited to participate in an experiment. Subjects revealed their beliefs about their own performance and their groups performance by participating in a choice task. On average, subjects show similar levels of con dence in themselves and in their groups. Behind these similar average levels of con dence lie some striking gender di¤erences. The results con rm previous evidence that men show more con dence in their own performances than women, but indicate that women actually show somewhat more con dence in their groups.
