The Use of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) Coding in Identifying Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Health System Data: Implications for Surveillance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction In the United States, 800,0001.4 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV); these persons are at increased risk for chronic liver disease and its sequelae (CDC, 2010; Wasley, 2010). Current national viral hepatitis surveillance is a passive laboratory-initiated reporting system to state or local health departments with only 39 health departments reporting chronic HBV infection in the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS). Since active HBV surveillance can be expensive and labor-intensive, the ICD-9 coding system has been proposed for surveillance of chronic hepatitis B.

Use of the International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision, coding in identifying chronic hepatitis B virus infection in health system data: implications for national surveillance
OBJECTIVE With increasing use electronic health records (EHR) in the USA, we looked at the predictive values of the International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision (ICD-9) coding system for surveillance of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS The chronic HBV cohort from the Chronic Hepatitis Cohort Study was created based on electronic health records (EHR) o...

With the spread of avian influenza, use of automated data streams to rapidly detect and track human influenza cases has increased. We performed correlation analyses to determine whether International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9), groupings used to detect influenzalike illness (ILI) within an automated syndromic system correlate with respiratory virus laboratory test result...
متن کاملCompleteness of Reporting of Chronic Hepatitis B and C Virus Infections — Michigan, 1995–2008
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are leading causes of death from cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in the United States. Because underreporting has complicated the understanding of disease burden, in 2010 the Institute of Medicine requested that CDC perform a comprehensive evaluation of national viral hepatitis surveillance. Hepatitis surveill...
متن کاملTrends in epidemiology of Hepatitis B and C Infections in Ilam Province: National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System data
Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are the main causes of severe liver failure worldwide. This study was conducted to evaluate the incidence rate and trend of these infections over six successive years from 2008 to 2013 in Ilam Province, western Iran. Methods: We studied the registered data of HBV and HCV based on the National Notifiable Diseases Surveil...
متن کاملCurrent progress in the development of therapeutic vaccines for chronic hepatitis B virus infection
Chronic hepatitis B is still a major public health issue despite the successful prophylactic vaccination attempts. Chronicity of hepatitis B virus(HBV) is mainly due to its ability to debilitate host's immune system. Therefore, major measures have been taken to stop this process and help patients with chronic hepatitis B infection recover from their illness. While satisfactory results have been...
