Improving reverse neuroimaging inference: cognitive domain versus cognitive complexity.

چکیده
in brain areas usually associated with both the trigger sensation and the secondary sensation. For example, activation in left colour-sensitive cortex occurred in word– colour synaesthetes hearing words [14] but not in nonsynaesthetes trained to associate colour with words [15]. Many issues concerning the anatomy underlying information processing in synaesthesia remain to be elucidated but this method of using interference techniques to investigate whether synaesthesia involves the same sensory multimodal areas that support cross-modal integration in non-synaesthetes is an important approach. The two immediate questions that pose themselves are how Esterman et al.’s finding will generalize to other synaesthetes and whether the timing of the putative synaesthetic binding is similar to that of sensory integration in non-synaesthetes.

been defined in various ways, including the level of embedding in a goal–subgoal hierarchy during problem-solving [6], the number of relations being simultaneously processed during reasoning [7], or the number of items held in working memory [8]. Reviews of RLPFC recruitment across multiple domains [2,9] show that activations are more frequent when the complexity of cognitive processing is high...
متن کاملCan cognitive processes be inferred from neuroimaging data?
There is much interest currently in using functional neuroimaging techniques to understand better the nature of cognition. One particular practice that has become common is 'reverse inference', by which the engagement of a particular cognitive process is inferred from the activation of a particular brain region. Such inferences are not deductively valid, but can still provide some information. ...
متن کاملForward inference using functional neuroimaging: dissociations versus associations.
Many people are excited by functional neuroimaging as a new tool for cognitive science; many others are sceptical. In this opinion article, I describe a 'forward inference' that one can make from patterns of brain activity to distinguish between cognitive theories. I give an example of forward inferences in research on recognition memory, and outline some statistical criteria for a 'qualitative...
متن کاملA Bayesian Hierarchical Spatial Point Process Model for Multi-type Neuroimaging Meta-analysis.
Neuroimaging meta-analysis is an important tool for finding consistent effects over studies that each usually have 20 or fewer subjects. Interest in meta-analysis in brain mapping is also driven by a recent focus on so-called "reverse inference": where as traditional "forward inference" identifies the regions of the brain involved in a task, a reverse inference identifies the cognitive processe...
متن کاملThe application of neuroimaging to social inequity and language disparity: A cautionary examination
In the nascent field of the cognitive neuroscience of socioeconomic status (SES), researchers are using neuroimaging to examine how growing up in poverty affects children's neurocognitive development, particularly their language abilities. In this review we highlight difficulties inherent in the frequent use of reverse inference to interpret SES-related abnormalities in brain regions that suppo...
