چکیده

A generation of halo particles and an emittance growth are investigated numerically for a highcurrent beam transport during a longitudinal bunch compression. The halo particles are generated during the drift compression with an alternating gradient confinement lattice in the transverse direction. The emittance growth is caused by the halo particle generation, and depends on the drift length for the bunch compression. The orbit of generated halo particles extends outward with the beam current increase. The initial particle distribution affects the halo particle generation after the drift beam transport.

Overview of the Scientific Objectives of the High Current Experiment for Heavy-ion Fusion*

The High Current Experiment (HCX) is being built to explore heavy-ion beam transport at a scale appropriate to the low-energy end of a driver for fusion energy production. The primary mission of this experiment is to investigate aperture fill factors acceptable for the transport of space-charge dominated heavy-ion beams at high space-charge intensity (line-charge density ~ 0.2 μC/m) over long p...

Halo formation and emittance growth of positron beams in plasmas.

An ultrarelativistic 28.5 GeV, 700-microm-long positron bunch is focused near the entrance of a 1.4-m-long plasma with a density n(e) between approximately equal to 10(13) and approximately equal to 5 x 10(14) cm(-3). Partial neutralization of the bunch space charge by the mobile plasma electrons results in a reduction in transverse size by a factor of approximately equal to 3 in the high emitt...

Electron Beam Acceleration and Compression for Short Wavelength FELs

A single pass UV or X-ray FEL will require a low emittance electron beam with high peak current and relatively high beam energy, a few hundred MeV to many GeV. To achieve the necessary peak current and beam energy, the beams must be bunch compressed and they must be accelerated in long transport lines where dispersive and wakefield emittance dilutions are important. In this paper, we will descr...

Ion Effects in Future Circular and Linear Accelerators

In this paper, we discuss ion effects relevant to future storage rings and linear colliders. We ®rst review the conventional ion effects observed in present storage rings and then discuss how these effects will differ in the next generation of rings and linacs. These future accelerators operate in a new regime because of the high current long bunch trains and the very small transverse beam emit...

Emittance preservation during bunch compression with a magnetized beam

The deleterious effects of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) on the phase-space and energy spread of high-energy beams in accelerator light sources can significantly constrain the machine design and performance. In this paper, we present a simple method to preserve the beam emittance by means of using magnetized beams that exhibit a large aspect ratio on their transverse dimensions. The conc...
