RHESSI as a Hard X-Ray Polarimeter

چکیده
Although designed primarily as a hard X-ray imager and spectrometer, the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) is also capable of measuring the polarization of hard X-rays (20–100 keV) from solar flares. This capability arises from the inclusion of a small unobstructed Be scattering element that is strategically located within the cryostat that houses the array of nine germanium detectors. The Ge detectors are segmented, with both a front and rear active volume. Low energy photons (below about 100 keV) can reach a rear segment of a Ge detector only indirectly, by scattering. Low energy photons from the Sun have a direct path to the Be and have a high probability of Compton scattering into a rear segment of a Ge detector. The azimuthal distribution of these scattered photons carries with it a signature of the linear polarization of the incident flux. Sensitivity estimates, based on Monte Carlo simulations and in-flight background measurements, indicate that a 20–100 keV polarization sensitivity of less than a few percent can be achieved for X-class flares.

Broadband Quasi-Periodic Radio and X-ray Pulsations in a Solar Flare
We describe microwave and hard X-ray observations of strong quasiperiodic pulsations from the GOES X1.3 solar flare on 15 June 2003. The radio observations were made jointly by the Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA), the Nobeyama Polarimeter (NoRP), and the Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH). Hard X-ray observations were made by the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). Using Fourie...
متن کاملX-ray Polarization of Solar Flares Measured with Rhessi
The degree of linear polarization in solar flares has not yet been precisely determined despite multiple attempts to measure it with different missions. The high energy range in particular has very rarely been explored, due to its greater instrumental difficulties. We approached the subject using the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) satellite to study 6 X-class and 1 M-cl...
متن کاملRHESSI: First Results
The RHESSI observations consist of imaging spectroscopy in the γ-ray, hard X-ray, and “firm X-ray” (3-20 keV) bands. These data are now the most extensive and capable solar high-energy observations at high spectral and spatial resolution. The low-energy hard X-ray spectrum bridges the thermal and non-thermal ranges of solar electron distributions in flares systematically for the first time. In ...

Recent progress in the diagnosis of flare fast particles is critically discussed with the main emphasis on high resolution Hard X-Ray (HXR) data from RHESSI and coordinated data from other instruments. Spectacular new photon data findings are highlighted as are advances in theoretical aspects of their use as fast particle diagnostics, and some important comparisons made with interplanetary part...
متن کاملSolar Flare Hard X-ray Spectra Possibly Inconsistent with the Collisional Thick Target Model
Recent progress in solar Hard X-ray (HXR) observations with RHESSI data and methods for spectral inversion allow us to study model-independent mean electron flux spectra in solar flares. We report several hard X-ray events observed by RHESSI in which the photon spectra I(ǫ) are such that the inferred source mean electron spectra are not consistent with the standard model of collisional transpor...
