Ionization of Water, Weak Acids and Weak Bases

چکیده

lthough many of the solvent properties of water can be explained in terms of the uncharged H2O molecules, the small degree of ionization of water to hydrogen ions (H) and hydroxide ions (OH ) must also be taken into account. Like all reversible reactions, the ionization of water can be described by an equilibrium constant. When weak acids or weak bases are dissolved in water, they can contribute H by ionizing (if acids) or consume H by being protonated (if bases). These processes are also governed by equilibrium constants. The total hydrogen ion concentration from all sources, which is experimentally measurable, is expressed as the pH of the solution. Water molecules have a slight tendency to undergo reversible ionization to yield a hydrogen ion and a hydroxide ion : H2O l H + + OH ...(3.1) This reversible ionization is crucial to the role of water in cellular functions. Henceforth, we must have a means of expressing the extent of ionization of water in quantitative terms. This is discussed below. The position of equilibrium of any chemical reaction is given by its equilibrium constant. For the general reaction, A + B l C + D ...(3.2)

Calculation of Ionization Constants of Monoprotic Weak Acids in Aqueous Solutions

Internet Electron. J. Mol. Des. 2004, 1, 000–000 Abstract Motivation. The ionization constants are fundamental to explain the occurrence of numerous and varied processes of great importance in Chemistry and Biology. With the specific aim of contributing to the development of theoretical procedures to study the acidity constants in this work we show the feasibility of a DFT method that makes use...

The Theory of Acids and Bases

The Water or Arrhenius Theory was widely accepted up to the early years of this century . It defines an acid as a hydrogen compound ionizing in water to give hydrogen ions, and a base as a hy<iToxyl compound which gives hydroxide ions in water. The neutralization reaction between an acid and a base produces a salt and water only: HA(ac id) + BOH(base) ""' BA(salt) + H 20(water) and the salts so...

Solution of Harmonic Problems with Weak Singularities Using Equilibrated Basis Functions in Finite Element Method

In this paper, Equilibrated Singular Basis Functions (EqSBFs) are implemented in the framework of the Finite Element Method (FEM), which can approximately satisfy the harmonic PDE in homogeneous and heterogeneous media. EqSBFs are able to automatically reproduce the terms consistent with the singularity order in the vicinity of the singular point. The newly made bases are used as the compliment...

General Analytical Procedure for Determination of Acidity Parameters of Weak Acids and Bases

The paper presents a new convenient, inexpensive, and reagent-saving general methodology for the determination of pK a values for components of the mixture of diverse chemical classes weak organic acids and bases in water solution, without the need to separate individual analytes. The data obtained from simple pH-metric microtitrations are numerically processed into reliable pK a values for eac...

A STUDY OF ULTRASONIC ABSORPTION OF SOME AMINO ACIDS AND THEIR MIXTURES AT PHYSIOLOGICAL pH

In this paper, the ultrasonic absorption of amino acids was measured using a small cylindrical resonator at physiological pH and 25°C and a concentration of 0.1. M. The absorption of mixtures of some amino acids was also measured. In the case of cysteine-histidine, the absorption of mixtures is much larger (more than twice) than the summation of absorption of the individual amino acid. This...
