Inhalation Therapy: Practical Considerations for Nebulisation Therapy
نویسنده
چکیده
Many drugs may be administered either as a powder, a spray, or a nebulised aerosol. Even though the formulation is the same, the more common drugs are available in different inhaler device brands, or as a solution/suspension to aerosolise in a nebuliser system with unspecified characteristics. What formulation and type of inhalation device to choose is dependent upon factors such as type of drug, patient age, physical and mental capacities, and in what situation the drug is to be inhaled.1–3 Typically, the therapist is faced with a choice between a variety of alternatives. Optimally, a spray (pMDI) with a spacer should be used for delivering steroids to avoid a high bioavailability of drug deposited in the oropharynx, and to reduce simultaneously the occurrence of Candida spp. in the mouth.2 Otherwise, if drugs come

متن کاملAssessment of the potential of a high frequency acoustomicrofluidic nebulisation platform for inhaled stem cell therapy.
Despite the promise of stem cell therapy for lung therapeutics and repair, there are few viable means for directly delivering stem cells to locally target the respiratory airways via inhalation. This is not surprising given the significant challenges in aerosolising stem cells, particularly given their susceptibility to damage under the large stresses involved in the nebulisation process. Here,...
متن کاملNovel pDNA nanoparticles for pulmonary gene delivery
The development of new therapies by gene transfer to the lung epithelial cells is an attractive prospect because of the potential ease of access to a vast surface area of tissue and the prospects for administration of gene vectors by inhalation. A number of respiratory diseases could benefit from this approach, including cystic fibrosis (CF), and more common chronic conditions such as asthma an...
متن کاملThe use of an alternate side lying positioning strategy during inhalation therapy does not prolong nebulisation time in adults with Cystic Fibrosis: a randomised crossover trial
BACKGROUND Inhalation of nebulised medications is performed in upright sitting to maximise lung volumes. The pattern of deposition is poor for inhaled medications in people with Cystic Fibrosis. The pattern tends to be non-uniform and typically the upper lobes receive a reduced dose compared to the rest of the lung. One strategy that has been proposed as having the potential to improve homogene...
متن کاملPatients’ practices and experiences of using nebuliser therapy in the management of COPD at home
BACKGROUND AND AIM How patients use their nebulisers at home is vital to ensure effective treatment and optimal health outcomes for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of the study was to identify the practicalities and problems associated with nebuliser use by patients with COPD at home, which may impact on the safety and effectiveness of therapy. DESIGN AND S...
