چکیده

This paper reports mechanical tasting and modeling results for the McKibben artificial muscle pneumatic actuator. This device, first developed in the 1950’s, contains an expanding tube surrounded by braided cords. We report static and dynamic length-tension testing results and derive a linearized model of these properties for three different models. The results are brieffy compared with human muscle properties to evaluate the suitability of McKibben actuators for human muscle emulation in biologically based robot arms.

Pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) are becoming more commonly used as actuators in modern robotics. The most made and common type of these artificial muscles in use is the McKibben artificial muscle that was developed in 1950’s. This paper presents the geometric model of PAM and different Matlab models for pneumatic artificial muscles. The aim of our models is to relate the pressure and length...

Static Force Model of Pneumatic Artificial Muscles

Pneumatic actuators convert pneumatic energy into mechanical motion. This motion can be linear or rotary. Linear motion is feasible with pneumatic cylinders (e. g. single-acting cylinder, double-acting cylinder, rodless cylinder) and pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs). Pneumatic artificial muscle is the newest and most promising type of pneumatic actuators. PAM is a membrane that expands radia...

Experimental Study of Nonsingular Terminal Sliding Mode Controller for Robot Arm Actuated by Pneumatic Artificial Muscles

In this paper, experimental study of robust control for robot manipulator actuated by pneumatic artificial muscles was realized. The experimented controller belonged to the class of variable structure systems which is called nonsingular terminal sliding mode (NTSM). The control approach is based on the time delay estimation method. First, the nonsingular terminal sliding mode control approach w...

Pneumatic Artificial Muscles: actuators for robotics and automation

This article is intended as an introduction to and an overview of Pneumatic Artificial Muscles (PAMs). These are pneumatic actuators made mainly of a flexible and inflatable membrane. First, their concept and way of operation are explained. Next, the properties of these actuators are given, the most important of which are the compliant behavior and extremely low weight. A classification and rev...

Recent Trends in Lower-Limb Robotic Rehabilitation Orthosis: Control Scheme and Strategy for Pneumatic Muscle Actuated Gait Trainers

It is a general assumption that pneumatic muscle-type actuators will play an important role in the development of an assistive rehabilitation robotics system. In the last decade, the development of a pneumatic muscle actuated lower-limb leg orthosis has been rather slow compared to other types of actuated leg orthoses that use AC motors, DC motors, pneumatic cylinders, linear actuators, series ...

Robust Control Law for Pneumatic Artificial Muscles

This paper presents a modified integral sliding surface, sliding mode control law for pneumatic artificial muscles. The cutoff frequency tuning parameter λ is squared to increase the gradient from absement (integral of position) to position and higher derivatives to reflect the more dominant terms in the actuator dynamics. The sliding mode controller is coupled with proportional and integral ac...
