Genome evolution: Sex and the transposable element

چکیده
Mating systems are thought to play an important role in determining the fate of genomic parasites such as transposable elements. This is supported by recent studies which indicate that asexual genomes may be structured very differently to those of sexual species.

DPTEdb, an integrative database of transposable elements in dioecious plants
Dioecious plants usually harbor 'young' sex chromosomes, providing an opportunity to study the early stages of sex chromosome evolution. Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile DNA elements frequently found in plants and are suggested to play important roles in plant sex chromosome evolution. The genomes of several dioecious plants have been sequenced, offering an opportunity to annotate and min...
متن کاملStrong phylogenetic inertia on genome size and transposable element content among 26 species of flies
While the evolutionary mechanisms driving eukaryote genome size evolution are still debated, repeated element content appears to be crucial. Here, we reconstructed the phylogeny and identified repeats in the genome of 26 Drosophila exhibiting a twofold variation in genome size. The content in transposable elements (TEs) is highly correlated to genome size evolution among these closely related s...
متن کاملPerspective : Transposable Elements , Parasitic Dna , and Genome
The nature of the role played by mobile elements in host genome evolution is reassessed considering numerous recent developments in many areas of biology. It is argued that easy popular appellations such as ‘‘selfish DNA’’ and ‘‘junk DNA’’ may be either inaccurate or misleading and that a more enlightened view of the transposable element-host relationship encompasses a continuum from extreme pa...
متن کاملTransposable elements and the evolution of eukaryotic complexity.
Eukaryotic transposable elements are ubiquitous and widespread mobile genetic entities. These elements often make up a substantial fraction of the host genomes in which they reside. For example, approximately 1/2 of the human genome was recently shown to consist of transposable element sequences. There is a growing body of evidence that demonstrates that transposable elements have been major pl...
متن کاملRecurrent recruitment of the THAP DNA-binding domain and molecular domestication of the P-transposable element.
The recently described THAP domain motif characterizes a DNA-binding domain (DBD) that is widely conserved in human and in animals. It presents a similarity with the DBD of the P element transposase of D. melanogaster. We show here that the P Drosophila neogenes derived from P-transposable elements conserve the THAP domain. Moreover, secondary rearrangements by exon shuffling indicate the recur...
