Aircraft in Your Head: How Air Traffic Controllers Mentally Organize Air Traffic
نویسندگان
چکیده
The StayCentered Project at Technische Universität Chemnitz aims for assisting air traffic controllers in stressful traffic situations. Therefore we are seeking to comprehend air traffic controllers’ principles of operation within the dyadic team structure. First exploratory research revealed insights into air traffic controllers’ practices, their information processing (mental models), potential stressors, and related emotional effects. This paper discusses the results and the implications for air traffic controllers’ work in general and the StayCentered project in particular. Keywords–Air traffic control; HCI; Decision Support; Mental Models

How do Air Traffic Controllers Use Automation and Tools Differently During High Demand Situations?
In a human-in-the-loop simulation, two air traffic controllers managed identical airspace while burdened with higher than average workload, and while using advanced tools and automation designed to assist with scheduling aircraft on multiple arrival flows to a single meter fix. This paper compares the strategies employed by each controller, and investigates how the controllers’ strategies chang...
متن کاملPerformance Metrics for Tactical Aircraft to Aircraft Conflicts
An air traffic control system’s main function is to separate aircraft. The computer supporting the system assists the air traffic controllers by generating a conflict alert whenever it predicts that two aircraft are about to get too close to each other. The performance of the conflict alert function is a key element to the overall functioning of the air traffic control system. A set of metrics ...

Background and aim: Air traffic control has known as a complex cognitive task, which requires controller to focus on task for long time. Mental workload plays an important role in the performance of controllers. The aim of this study was to assess the workload of air traffic controller on the basis of task load factors. Methods: The present descriptive-analytical study was conducted among fo...
متن کاملThe Effect of Air Traffic Increase on Controller Workload
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been increasing the National Airspace System (NAS) capacity to accommodate the predicted rapid growth of air traffic. One method to increase the capacity is reducing air traffic controller workload so that they can handle more air traffic. It is crucial to measure the impact of the increasing future air traffic on controller workload. Our experiment...
متن کاملThe Role of the Air Traffic Controller in Future Air Traffic Management: An Empirical Study of Active Control versus Passive Monitoring
Proposals for air traffic management such as Free Flight call for a transfer of responsibility for separation between aircraft from air traffic controllers (ATCos) to pilots. Under many proposals, the role of the ATCo will change from one of active control to passive monitoring. The present study directly compared these types of control with respect to ATCo mental workload, conflict detection, ...
