A Note on \Strategic Choice of Flexible Production Technologies and Welfare Implications"1

چکیده
This note corrects certain errors in welfare calculations and graphs of a paper by Roller and Tombak (JIE, 1990). The corrections necessitate a re-interpretation of some of their results. Contrary to authors' assertion (Proposition 1), consumer surplus is not always the highest in (FMS, FMS) state. Producing in both markets imposes a negative externality that grows as products become more substitutable, leading to a reduction in output levels. Secondly, corrected graphs reveal that the di erence in producers' and total surplus between (DE, DE) and (FMS, FMS) states is not as large as depicted by the authors. I thank Professor Richard Loulou for his invaluable encouragement, guidance, and support. Any errors are solely mine.

Note on social choice allocation in exchange economies with Cobb-Douglas preferences
In this note we show that in a pure exchange economy with two agents and a finite number of goods, there exists no strategy-proof, Pareto efficient and nondictatorial social choice allocation function on any local Cobb-Douglas preference domain. This is a slight extension of a result proved by Hashimoto (2008).
متن کاملStrategic Immigration Policies and Welfare in Heterogeneous Countries∗
In this paper we consider a model with two industrialized countries and immigrants that come from “the rest of the world.” The countries are distinguished on the basis of three parameters: population size, bias toward immigrants, and production complementarity between native population and immigrants. We consider a non-cooperative game where each country makes a strategic choice of its immigrat...
متن کاملStrategic choice of flexible manufacturing technologies
The question addressed is how the strategic choice of flexible manufacturing technologies intensifies and interacts with competition among firms. We focus on the manufacturing flexibility that allows a firm to produce its outputs at shorter expected delivery time. We find that increasing the number of firms will decrease firms’ incentive to acquire more flexible manufacturing technologies. r 20...
متن کاملComparison of the performances of neural networks specification, the Translog and the Fourier flexible forms when different production technologies are used
This paper investigates the performances of artificial neural networks approximation, the Translog and the Fourier flexible functional forms for the cost function, when different production technologies are used. Using simulated data bases, the author provides a comparison in terms of capability to reproduce input demands and in terms of the corresponding input elasticities of substitution esti...
متن کاملBilateral monopolies, exible production technologies and upstream merger
In this paper I develop a theoretical model and analyze the relationship between two bilateral monopolies, investments decisions of downstream rms regarding technologies speci c to suppliers, and suppliers incentives to merge. The paper discusses the concept of the choice of dedicated versus exible production technology in the context of bilateral monopolies. I aim to answer two questions. F...
