A Bayes Net Toolkit for Student Modeling in Intelligent Tutoring Systems

چکیده
This paper describes an effort to model a student’s changing knowledge state during skill acquisition. Dynamic Bayes Nets (DBNs) provide a powerful way to represent and reason about uncertainty in time series data, and are therefore well-suited to model student knowledge. Many general-purpose Bayes net packages have been implemented and distributed; however, constructing DBNs often involves complicated coding effort. To address this problem, we introduce a tool called BNTSM. BNT-SM inputs a data set and a compact XML specification of a Bayes net model hypothesized by a researcher to describe causal relationships among student knowledge and observed behavior. BNT-SM generates and executes the code to train and test the model using the Bayes Net Toolbox [1]. Compared to the BNT code it outputs, BNT-SM reduces the number of lines of code required to use a DBN by a factor of 5. In addition to supporting more flexible models, we illustrate how to use BNT-SM to simulate Knowledge Tracing (KT) [2], an established technique for student modeling. The trained DBN does a better job of modeling and predicting student performance than the original KT code (Area Under Curve = 0.610 > 0.568), due to differences in how it estimates parameters.

Does Help Help? A Bayes Net Approach to Modeling Tutor Interventions
This paper describes an effort to measure the effectiveness of tutor help in an intelligent tutoring system. Although conventional preand posttest experiments can determine whether tutor help is effective, they are expensive to conduct. Furthermore, preand posttest experiments often do not model student knowledge explicitly and thus are ignoring a source of information: students often request h...

This paper describes the process by which we are constructing an intelligent tutoring system (ERST) designed to improve learners’ external representation (ER) selection accuracy on a range of database query tasks. This paper describes how ERST’s student model is being constructed it is a Bayesian network seeded with data from experimental studies. The studies examined the effects of students’ b...
متن کاملModeling Helping Behavior in an Intelligent Tutor for Peer Tutoring
Giving effective help is an important collaborative skill that leads to improved learning for both the help-giver and help-receiver. Adding intelligent tutoring to student interaction may be one effective way of assisting students in giving and receiving better help. However, such systems have proven difficult to implement, in part due to the challenges of modeling productive dialogue in a coll...
متن کاملThe Effect of Model Granularity on Student Performance Prediction Using Bayesian Networks
A standing question in the field of Intelligent Tutoring Systems and User Modeling in general is what is the appropriate level of model granularity (how many skills to model) and how is that granularity derived? In this paper we will explore varying levels of skill generality within 8 grade mathematics using models containing 1, 5, 39 and 106 skills. We will measure the accuracy of these models...
متن کاملInterest-Focused Tutoring: A Tractable Approach to Modeling in Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Despite the progress made in the field of intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), it is still a major challenge to build systems that can teach about complex, ill-structured domains. A chief reason is that detailed, dynamic modeling of students' knowledge is intractable in such areas, and complete, correct models of expert knowledge are inherently difficult to build. These difficulties have led som...
