Coexisting ordinary elasticity and superfluidity in a model of defect-free supersolid

چکیده
We present the mechanics of a model of supersolid in the frame of the GrossPitaevskii equation at T = 0K that do not require defects nor vacancies. A set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations plus boundary conditions is derived. The mechanical equilibrium is studied under external constrains as steady rotation or external stress. Our model displays a paradoxical behavior: the existence of a non classical rotational inertia fraction in the limit of small rotation speed and no superflow under small (but finite) stress nor external force. The only matter flow for finite stress is due to plasticity.

Coexistence of ordinary elasticity and superfluidity in a model of a defect-free supersolid.
The mechanical behavior of a supersolid is studied in the framework of a fully explicit model derived from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation without assuming any defect or vacancy. A set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations plus boundary conditions is derived. The conditions of mechanical equilibrium are studied under external constraints such as steady rotation and external stress. ...
متن کاملSqueezing superfluid from a stone: coupling superfluidity and elasticity in a supersolid.
Starting from the assumption that the normal solid to supersolid (NS-SS) phase transition is continuous, we develop a phenomenological Landau theory of the transition in which superfluidity is coupled to the elasticity of the crystalline lattice. We find that the elasticity does not affect the universal properties of the superfluid transition, so that in an unstressed crystal the well-known ano...
متن کاملStability of superflow in supersolid phases of lattice bosons with dipole-dipole interaction
We investigate the stability of superflow of bosons with isotropic dipole-dipole interactions in a two-dimensional optical lattice. We perform linear stability analyses for the dipolar Bose-Hubbard model in the hardcore boson limit, and show that the superflow can exist in a supersolid phase unless the velocity exceeds a certain critical value and that the critical value is remarkably smaller t...
متن کاملSuperfluid transition in a correlated defect network
Motivated by recent experiments on the possible supersolid behavior of 4He solids at low temperature, we consider a model of superfluidity in a defected solid containing a system spanning network of correlated linear dislocations, or planar grain boundaries. Using arguments based on the Harris criterion, as well as numerical simulations, we find that such correlated quenched disorder shifts the...
متن کاملSupersolid phase in fully frustrated Josephson junction arrays
We study the phase diagram and the excitation spectra of an array of small Josephson junctions at f = 1/2 and arbitrary charge frustration. We find that the supersolid region in the phase diagram is larger than the correspondent region at f = 0 and it includes two different phases. In the chiral supersolid (SS) charges and vortices are arranged in a checkerboard pattern on a 2 × 2 supercell anal...
