Bar Codes Lead to Frequent Deliveries and Superstores
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper explores the consequences of new information technologies, such as bar codes and computer-tracking of inventories, for the optimal organization of retail. The first result is that there is a complementarity between the new information technology and frequent deliveries. This is consistent with the recent move in the retail sector toward higher-frequency delivery schedules. The second result is that adoption of the new technology tends to increase store size. This is consistent with recent increases in store size and the success of the superstore model of retail organization. 1 I am grateful to Joseph Harrington and the referees for detailed comments that led to a substantial improvement of the paper. Symptoms of stress related to the characteristics of customer service in warehouse superstores
A study was carried out in a large chain of warehouse superstores specialized in office supplies. The stress symptoms of 91 sales clerks and 28 managers in six warehouse superstores were documented with the Karasek and Maslach questionnaires. The results show different stress symptoms in the two populations. In managers, stress could result from an overinvestment in the work, whereas for sales ...
متن کاملCharacterization of synthetic DNA bar codes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene-deletion strains.
Incorporation of strain-specific synthetic DNA tags into yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene-deletion strains has enabled identification of gene functions by massively parallel growth rate analysis. However, it is important to confirm the sequences of these tags, because mutations introduced during construction could lead to significant errors in hybridization performance. To validate this expe...

متن کاملA study of an integrated inventory model for imperfect production system with backorders
In recent years, companies have found that there are substantial benefit and competitive advantage from establishing a long-term sole-supplier relationship with supplier. In the integrated inventory model practices characterized by a sole-supplier base whose firm is located close to the buyer’s plant and makes frequent deliveries is considered a long-term partner with the buying company. The ch...
متن کاملSingle-Setup-Multiple-Deliveries for a Single Supplier-Single Buyer with Single Product and Backorder
This article investigates integrated production-inventory models with backorder. A single supplier and a single buyer are considered and shortage as backorder is allowed for the buyer. The proposed models determine optimal order quantity, optimal backorder quantity and optimal number of deliveries on the joint total cost for both buyer and supplier. Two cases are discussed: single-setup-singl...
