چکیده

In a retrospective review of 3,000 consecutive fibreoptic bronchoscopies, fifty were performed for investigation of lone pleural effusion. While 7 patients had bronchogenic carcinoma, in only one case was it visible endoscopically. In the absence of radiological or clinical features suggesting an endobronchial lesion, fibreoptic bronchoscopy is unlikely to aid in the diagnosis of lone pleural effusion.

The role of fibreoptic bronchoscopy in the investigation of pleural effusion.

Published data on the role of fibreoptic bronchoscopy in the investigation of pleural effusions are sparse and conflicting. We have reviewed our experience from November 1980 to December 1986. Thirty-two patients were identified from bronchoscopy records as having undergone the procedure during the evaluation of an effusion. Fibreoptic bronchoscopy was diagnostic in 6 of the 32 cases, but less ...

Thoracoscopy: assessment of a physician service and comparison of a flexible bronchoscope used as a thoracoscope with a rigid thoracoscope.

The practicality of physicians performing thoracoscopy for diagnostic purposes was assessed in 30 patients with pleural effusions of unknown cause. A rigid thoracoscope was compared with a fibreoptic bronchoscope used as a flexible thoracoscope and the diagnostic adequacy of biopsy specimens obtained with the two instruments assessed. The two instruments were inserted by a physician in the bron...
