Seasonal Changes in UVB Availability in Europe and Associations with Population Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D

چکیده
The major source of vitamin D in humans is ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in sunshine. It has been estimated that vitamin D production in skin provides between 80-100% of the body’s vitamin D requirements [2], and that food sources play a lesser role. Vitamin D is produced when UVB radiation reaches 7-dehydrocholestol in the skin, and there are a number of personal and environmental factors that can help or hinder this first step [3]. The personal factors include skin colour/pigmentation, age, clothing, use of suncreeen and sun exposure behaviour, while the environmental factors that determine if UVB radiation of sufficient strength is available for skin production of vitamin D include season, latitude and time of day.

Seasonal Changes in Vitamin D-Effective UVB Availability in Europe and Associations with Population Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D
Low vitamin D status is common in Europe. The major source of vitamin D in humans is ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced dermal synthesis of cholecalciferol, whereas food sources are believed to play a lesser role. Our objectives were to assess UVB availability (Jm(-2)) across several European locations ranging from 35° N to 69° N, and compare these UVB data with representative population serum 25-hydr...
متن کاملSerum level of vitamin D3 in vitiligo patients before and after treatment with narrow band UVB. Is there an association with treatment?
Background: Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder of the skin characterized by the loss of melanocytes through different mechanisms. Narrow band UVB (NBUVB) is a safe and effective treatment for vitiligo that acts by inducing the synthesis of cytokines involved in melanogenesis. NBUVB appears to be involved in the treatment of vitiligo by increasing the synthesis of vitamin D, which prevents the ...
متن کامل25-Hydroxyvitamin D as a Biomarker of Vitamin D Status and Its Modeling to Inform Strategies for Prevention of Vitamin D Deficiency within the Population.
There is substantial evidence that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is unacceptably high in the population, and this requires action from a public health perspective. Circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is a robust and reliable marker of vitamin D status and has been used by numerous agencies in the establishment of vitamin D dietary requirements and for population surveillance of v...
متن کاملSeasonal variations in serum vitamin D according to age and sex
Background: Exposure to sunlight is the main source of vitamin D production. This study was performed to assess the status of serum vitamin D across the different seasons in geographic region of Babol, with latitude of 36 in northern Iran. Methods: The study – female participants were 15 years old and above selected prospectively according to the inclusion criteria who attended an Outpatient c...
متن کاملInvestigating the patterns and determinants of seasonal variation in vitamin D status in Australian adults: the Seasonal D Cohort Study
BACKGROUND Vitamin D status generally varies seasonally with changing solar UVB radiation, time in the sun, amount of skin exposed, and, possibly, diet. The Seasonal D Study was designed to quantify the amplitude and phase of seasonal variation in the serum concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, (25OH)D)) and identify the determinants of the amplitude and phase and those of inter-individual vari...
