چکیده

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been proved as an important tool in healing of CO poisoning, necrosis, ischemic wounds, inflammatory diseases or brain injuries. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a key role in healing potential of HBOT however potential side effects must be taken into account. Equally important is also duration of HBOT. We can conclude, that despite several decades of HBOT use in clinical therapy, there are still not known it ́s detailed mechanisms of action on the molecular level and considerable part of information comes of animal experiments. Apart from the results of basic research is necessary to obtain a larger volume of complex data from clinical trials of HBOT.

Treatment of nervous system injuries by hyperbaric oxygen: a review of molecular mechanisms

Background and aims: The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the treatment methods to treat many diseases and injuries such as decompression sickness, wound healing, carbon monoxide poisoning, thermal burns, and nervous system injuries. This article aims to review the possible mechanisms of the effectiveness of this treatment in neurological injuries according to the available studies...

Detection of DNA damage after hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is successfully used for the treatment of a variety of conditions. However, exposure to high concentrations of oxygen is known to induce damage to cells, possibly due to an increased oxygen radical production. As reactive oxygen species also cause DNA damage, we investigated the DNA-damaging effect of HBO with the alkaline version of the single cell gel test (com...

Anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects of hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning in a rat model of cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy

Objective(s): Cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy is a debilitating side effect in patients receiving this drug.  Recent studies suggest hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy as a new treatment approach for models of neural injury. The aim of the current study was to determine the protective effects of HBO preconditioning against peripheral neuropathy induced by Cisplati...

Effect of hyperbaric oxygen on experimental acute distal colitis.

It has been demonstrated that hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) is useful as an adjunctive therapy for Crohn's disease. However, its effects on ulcerative colitis have not been investigated. In the present study, HBO was tested for acetic acid-induced colitis, and antioxidant systems were evaluated to clarify its possible mode of action. Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three gro...

Alzheimer ’s Disease: Possible Mechanisms Behind Neurohormesis Induced by Exposure to Low Doses of Ionizing Radiation

In 2016, scientists reported that human exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation (CT scans of the brain) might relieve symptoms of both Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson disease (PD). The findings were unbelievable for those who were not familiar with neurohormesis. X-ray stimulation of the patient’s adaptive protection systems against neurodegenerative diseases was the mechanism pr...
