Social events dominate Saint Mary ’ s schedule

Incidents m arred the past tw o days as a N otre Dame student alm ost had her purse snatched, tw o Saint Mary's students w ere frightened by "someone or som ething” on Saint Mary’s Road, a man similar to the descrip tion of last w eek’s rape suspect was spotted on U.S. 31, and a local youth allegedly posed as a Dillon Hall janitor in an attem pt to burglarize rooms, according to Information Service’s Richard Conklin. In the first incident, Conklin said a N otre Dame stu­ dent was walking to Pasquerilla Hall from the library w hen “a youth” attem pted to snatch her purse. Details o f the Sunday evening confrontation rem ain sketchy, bu t the w om an prevented the theft and escaped un­ scathed. Shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, tw o Saint Mary’s girls reported to Security that they had been “frightened,” according to Conklin, by “som ething o r som eone in the graveyard.” The cem etery is adjacent to the road on w hich the girls w ere walking. Conklin said, how ever, that Security officials could not determ ine w hether o r not a person, a shadow or “perhaps som e trees moving in the w ind” had frightened the women. A man w earing an orange ski mask — the same type last w eek’s rape suspect allegedly w ore — was also spotted Sunday night, walking south on U.S. 3 1. After notified o f the man, how ever, security officials could no t locate him. The Office o f Inform ation Services also reported yes­ terday that police w ere questioning a ”17 year old South Bend youth" w ho allegedly posed as a janitor in Dillon Hall and used the guise to burglarize students’ rooms. A Dillon Hall resident said the burglar was first spotted shortly after 6 a.m. yesterday morning. The resident added that the burglar was “mostly after clothes. ” The studen t explained that dorm residents put their laundry bags outside the hall’s chutes since they arc usually overloaded. Upon noticing the thief, residents called Security, and officials apprehended the youth upon arrival.
