Collaboration among sponge species increases sponge diversity and abundance in a seagrass meadow

چکیده

Sponges stand out among sessile marine animals in the great variety of collaborative associations in which they participate. When intimately associated organisms represent taxa with very different characteristics, the ways in which they might benefit each other are readily apparent. For example, non-sponge partners can provide mobility (e.g. decorator crabs, Stachowicz & Hay 2000), solid stable substratum (e.g. clams, Marin & Belluga 2005; mangrove roots, Ellison et al. 1996), skeletal reinforcement (e.g. macroalgae, Rützler 1990; Carballo & Ávila 2004), or food (e.g. zooxanthellae, Rosell & Uriz 1992) for sponges, while the unusual chemistry and flexible morphology of sponges enable them to provide protective coverings or homes (review in Wulff 2006b). How an intimate association can be mutually beneficial is less clear when both participants are sponges. In particular, associations that involve overgrowth of one sponge by another, blocking water intake surfaces of these efficient filter feeders, seem

Decapod Crustaceans associated with the sponge Sarcotragus muscarum Schmidt, 1864 (Porifera: Demospongiae) from the Levantine coasts of Turkey

The present study was carried out to determine the Decapod Crustaceans fauna in association with Sarcotragus muscarum Schmidt, 1864 from the Levantine Sea coasts of Turkey studied between 13 September 2005 and 07 October 2005. As a result of the present study, a total of 711 specimens belonging to 12 decapod species were identified. Among the species determined, Synalpheus gambaroloides (Nardo,...

Reduced Diversity and High Sponge Abundance on a Sedimented Indo-Pacific Reef System: Implications for Future Changes in Environmental Quality

Although coral reef health across the globe is declining as a result of anthropogenic impacts, relatively little is known of how environmental variability influences reef organisms other than corals and fish. Sponges are an important component of coral reef fauna that perform many important functional roles and changes in their abundance and diversity as a result of environmental change has the...

Sponge systematics by starfish: predators distinguish cryptic sympatric species of Caribbean fire sponges, Tedania ignis and Tedania klausi n. sp. (Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida).

Tedania ignis (Duchassaing and Michelotti, 1864), the fire sponge, is common throughout the tropical western Atlantic, and is a popular species for studies of ecology, larval biology, and chemistry. T. ignis is readily consumed by seagrass-dwelling starfish, and so finding sponges similar to this species in a seagrass meadow provoked closer scrutiny. A variety of ecological, morphological, and ...

The effects of coastal development on sponge abundance, diversity, and community composition on Jamaican coral reefs.

Over the past decade, development along the northern coast of Jamaica has accelerated, resulting in elevated levels of sedimentation on adjacent reefs. To understand the effects of this development on sponge community dynamics, we conducted surveys at three locations with varying degrees of adjacent coastal development to quantify species richness, abundance and diversity at two depths (8-10 m ...

Relationships between Host Phylogeny, Host Type and Bacterial Community Diversity in Cold-Water Coral Reef Sponges

Cold-water coral reefs are known to locally enhance the diversity of deep-sea fauna as well as of microbes. Sponges are among the most diverse faunal groups in these ecosystems, and many of them host large abundances of microbes in their tissues. In this study, twelve sponge species from three cold-water coral reefs off Norway were investigated for the relationship between sponge phylogenetic c...
