Extending the infrared radio correlation

چکیده

Co-addition of deep (rms ∼ 30μJy) 20cm data obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array at the location of Spitzer Wide field survey (SWIRE) sources has yielded statistics of radio source counterparts to faint 24μm sources in stacked images with rms < 1μJy. We confirm that the infrared-radio correlation extends to f24μm = 100μJy but with a significantly lower coefficient, f20cm = 0.039f24μm (q24 = log(f24μm/f20cm) = 1.39±0.02) than hitherto reported. We postulate that this may be due to a change in the mean q24 value ratio for objects with f24μm < 1mJy.

Linking radio to infrared: a radio source count model

We investigate the populations and evolution of normal and active galaxies by extending the infrared source count model of Rowan-Robinson (2001) into the radio. The FIR-radio correlation is used to extend the SEDs to the radio region and it is assumed that there are two distinct populations of quasar: radio loud and radio quiet. It is found that the radio luminosity function and source count da...

Estimating Star Formation Rates from Infrared and Radio Luminosities: the Origin of the Radio–infrared Correlation

I have assembled a diverse sample of galaxies from the literature with far-ultraviolet (FUV), optical, infrared (IR) and radio luminosities to explore the calibration of radio-derived and IR-derived star formation (SF) rates, and the origin of the radio-IR correlation. By comparing the 8–1000μm IR, which samples dust-reprocessed starlight, with direct stellar FUV emission, I show that the IR tr...

Phenomenological Modeling of the FIR – Radio Correlation within Nearby Star - Forming Galaxies

We present an analysis of the far-infrared (FIR)-radio correlation within a group of nearby star-forming galaxy disks observed as part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). In our study we critically test a phenomenological model for the FIR-radio correlation which describes the radio image as a smeared version of the infrared image. The physical basis for this model is that c...

The warm and cold far-IR/radio correlations

We present the correlation between the far-infrared (FIR) and radio emissions from a composite sample of 72 nearby normal galaxies observed with the ISOPHOT instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory. The galaxies in the sample have measurements at three FIR wavelengths (60, 100 and 170μm), which allowed a direct determination of the warm and cold FIR emission components. This is the fi...

The Far-infrared–radio Correlation at High Redshifts: Physical Considerations and Prospects for the Square Kilometer Array

I present a predictive analysis for the behavior of the far-infrared (FIR)–radio correlation as a function of redshift in light of the deep radio continuum surveys which may become possible using the square kilometer array (SKA). To keep a fixed ratio between the FIR and predominantly nonthermal radio continuum emission of a normal star-forming galaxy, whose cosmic-ray (CR) electrons typically ...
