Probing the validity of the Derjaguin approximation for heterogeneous colloidal particles.

چکیده
The Derjaguin approximation states that the interaction force between two curved surfaces is proportional to their effective radius, whereby the inverse effective radius is the arithmetic mean of the inverse curvature radii of the surfaces involved. The present study investigates the validity of this approximation with an atomic force microscope (AFM) by measuring interaction forces between colloidal particles of different sizes, but of identical composition. Forces were measured between silica particles of 2.0, 4.8 and 6.8 microm in diameter in KCl electrolyte solution with and without adsorbed poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers. The Derjaguin approximation could be confirmed at all distances investigated, including those comparable with the characteristic length scales of the surface roughness or the surface charge heterogeneities. For the conditions investigated, the Derjaguin approximation turns out to be surprisingly robust.

Effect of colloidal Particles associated with the liquid bridge in sticking during drying in Superheated Steam
It is very important in the design of a drying system is to evaluate sticking behaviour of the materials goes under drying. A new approach to the sticking issue is applied in this study by carrying out a sticking test for the liquid associated with the materials under study. It was found that the liquid bridge is responsible of the initial sticking of the materials to the contact surface and th...
متن کاملEffect of three-body forces on the phase behavior of charged colloids
Statistical-thermodynamic theory for predicting the phase behavior of a colloidal solution requires the pair interaction potential between colloidal particles in solution. In practice, it is necessary to assume pairwise additivity for the potential of mean force between colloidal particles, but little is known concerning the validity of this assumption. This paper concerns interaction between s...
متن کاملOverview of DLVO Theory
Derjaguin, Landau, Vervey, and Overbeek (DLVO) developed a theory of colloidal stability, which currently represents the cornerstone of our understanding of interactions between colloidal particles and their aggregation behavior. This theory is also being used to rationalize forces acting between interfaces and to interpret particle deposition to planar substrates. The same theory is also used ...
متن کاملPotential distribution theorem for the polymer-induced depletion between colloidal particles.
The authors investigated the polymer-mediated colloidal interactions in a good solvent wherein the particle size varies from that much smaller than the polymer radius of gyration up to macroscopic and the polymer concentration varies from that corresponding to a dilute solution to that close to a melt. At conditions directly accessible to molecular simulations, the theoretical predictions agree...
متن کاملStrong effect of weak charging in suspensions of anisotropic colloids.
Suspensions of hard colloidal particles frequently serve as model systems in studies on fundamental aspects of phase transitions. But often colloidal particles that are considered as "hard" are in fact weakly charged. If the colloids are spherical, weak charging has only a weak effect on the structural properties of the suspension, which can be easily corrected for. However, this does not hold ...
