چکیده

Purpose: It is widely acknowledged that chronic low-grade inflammation plays a key role in the development of obesity-related insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The level of circulating interleukin-6 (IL-6), one of themajor proinflammatory adipokines, is correlatedwith obesity and insulin resistance, which are known to be risk factors for colorectal adenoma. We examined the association between the circulating level of IL-6 and the presence of colorectal adenoma. Experimental Design: In a total colonoscopy-based cross-sectional study conducted between January and December 2008, serum levels of IL-6 were measured in samples of venous blood obtained from 336 male participants attending health checkups (118 individuals with colorectal adenoma and 218 agematched controls) after an overnight fast. Results: In the colorectal adenoma group, the median levels of serum IL-6 (1.24 vs. 1.04 pg/mL; P1⁄4 0.01), triglyceride, insulin, and homeostasismodel assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)were to be significantly higher than those in the control group. When restricted to individuals with adenoma, levels of IL-6 were positively correlated with body mass index, insulin, and HOMA-IR. Multiple logistic analyses adjusted to include insulin orHOMA-IR showed that high levels of IL-6were associatedwith the presence of colorectal adenoma. There was no significant interaction of IL-6 with HOMA-IR to modify this association. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that increased serum levels of IL-6 are positively associated with the presence of colorectal adenoma in men, independently of insulin and HOMA-IR. Fasting serum insulin levels and insulin resistance are associated with colorectal adenoma in Koreans

AIMS/INTRODUCTION Insulin has been associated with the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, few studies have evaluated the association between insulin and colorectal adenoma. We investigated the relationship between fasting serum insulin levels or homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and colorectal adenoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively enrolled 15,427 ...

EVALUATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SERUM LEVELS OF CARCINOEMBRYONIC ANTIGEN (CEA) AND HOMEOSTASIS MODEL ASSESSMENT OF INSULIN RESISTANCE-2 (HOMA2-IR) IN COLORECTAL CANCER PATIENTS

Background & Aims: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers and one of the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Accounting that the risk of colorectal cancer is associated with blood sugar indices as well as the role of CEA in the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer, this study was fulfilled to determine the relationship between serum level of CEA and HOMA2-IR...

Interleukin-6 as a potential indicator for prevention of high-risk adenoma recurrence by dietary flavonols in the polyp prevention trial.

Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), a proinflammatory cytokine, is considered an indicator of inflammation and may be an indicator of colorectal carcinogenesis given that inflammation can promote carcinogenesis. Flavonols, which can be found in fruits and vegetables, may inhibit colorectal carcinogenesis partly by inhibiting inflammation. We estimated odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) t...

Interplay of insulin-like growth factor-II, insulin-like growth factor-I, insulin-like growth factor-I receptor, COX-2, and matrix metalloproteinase-7, play key roles in the early stage of colorectal carcinogenesis.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to characterize the relationship of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II expression with IGF-I, IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-7 in early colorectal carcinogenesis. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN With the semiquantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR, 90 human colorectal tumor tissues (63 adenomas and 27 submucosal pT1 ...

Evaluation of preoperative elevation of serum c-reactive protein as an indicator for prognosis of colorectal cancer

Abstract   Background : Cancer has not been elucidated in colerectal site. C-reactive protein   (CRP) is a product synthesized in hepatocytes and has been reported to be up-regulated   by such proinflammatory cytokines as interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6),   and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). The significance of a preoperative serum elevation   was evaluated using CRP as a predictive i...
