چکیده
Fig. S1. ALDH3A2 mutations in the patient with Sjögren-Larsson syndrome and sequence alignments around the missense mutation. (A) Direct sequencing reveals a heterozygous c.1157A>G (p.N386S) transition in exon 8 of the ALDH3A2 gene in the patients and their mother, but not in their father or normal control samples. (B) A heterozygous c.1291_1292delAA (p.Lys431Glufs*5) mutation is found in exon 9 of ALDH3A2 in the patients and their father, but not in their mother or in normal controls. (C) Fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase (FALDH) amino-acid sequence alignment shows the level of conservation in diverse species of the amino-acid N386 (red characters), which was altered by the missense mutation in the present family. (D) A sequence alignment between the FALDH, rat class 3 and human class 1 and class 2 ALDHs showing the relative locations of key residues in these enzymes. The asparagine residue at codon 386 of FALDH is strictly conserved (red characters). Secondary structure components found in the class 3 rat ALDH structure are indicated with a bar and an arrow. The bar represents the α-helix and arrow represents β-strands. (Modified from Liu et al. (7)).

Association of VACTERL with truncus arteriosus, left-sided aortic arch, hypoplastic pulmonary arteries, and severe radial axis defect
Background: VACTERL association is usually a sporadic disorder, the possible etiologies of which have been proposed as familial as well as multiple genetic and environmental factors. VACTERL association usually consists of at least three of the core features of vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, and limb abnormalities. Vertebral anomali...
متن کاملIdentification of a novel deletion within ALDH3A2 gene in an Iranian Family with Sjögren–Larsson Syndrome
Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is a rare type of congenital ichthyosis with neurological problems and intellectual disability. Homozygous mutations in ALDH3A2 gene are known to be responsible for this syndrome. Here, we report an Iranian family with congenital SLS bearing a novel two-base-pair deletion within ALDH3A2 genomic sequence. Our finding expands the mutation spectrum of ALDH3A2 that is...

Karl Gustaf Torsten Sjögren (1896-1974), (Figure 1), a Swedish psychiatrist and geneticist, was a pioneer of modern Swedish psychiatry.1-4 Sjögren studied medicine at the University of Uppsala.1 From 1932 to 1935, he was Head Physician and Director of Lillehagen Hospital in Gothenburg, and between 19351945, he was physician-in-chief at the psychiatric department of Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothe...
متن کاملNeonate with VACTERL Association and a Branchial Arch Anomaly without Hydrocephalus
VACTERL (vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, cardiac defect, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomaly, limb anomalies) is an association of anomalies with a wide spectrum of phenotypic expression. While the majority of cases are sporadic, there is evidence of an inherited component in a small number of patients as well as the potential influence of nongenetic risk factors (maternal diabetes mell...
متن کاملConfirmation of linkage of Sjögren-Larsson syndrome to chromosome 17 in families of different ethnic origins.
Linkage analysis in two consanguineous pedigrees of Pakistani and English origin and one further Indian family in which affected subjects have Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) showed linkage to chromosome 17. Linkage of SLS to D17S783 and D17S805 has been reported in Swedish pedigrees, but since those data were generated from a single ethnic group originating from a common ancestor, there remaine...
