Dopaminergic modulation of cognition across the life span.

چکیده
Half a century ago, dopamine (DA) was discovered as a neurotransmitter in its own right (see Björklund and Dunnett, 2007 for review). Since then, dopaminergic systems have been studied in the context of neuropsychiatric and other disorders (e.g., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, Parkinsonism and drug addiction), as well as from the perspectives of cognitive child development and aging. This broad interest in DA primarily reflects its important neuromodulatory functions in (a) subcortical and cortical neural networks, (b) a wide range of cognitive functions, and (c) age-graded changes in behavior across the lifespan. Compared to research on dopaminergic modulation of cognition in healthy young adults and various patient populations, investigations of the link between lifespan changes in DA systems and cognitive functions have been sparse. Hence, drawing evidence from studies of adolescents, younger and older adults, the present collection of review articles was assembled to promote research on the relations between changes in dopaminergic modulation and cognition across the lifespan (Bäckman et al., 2000, 2006; Li and Lindenberger, 1999; Li et al., 2001). The articles discuss recent empirical and theoretical progress in understanding the maturation and senescence of DA systems and their influences on cognition. They cover a wide methodological spectrum, ranging from behavioral studies and behavioral genetics over genomic imaging to pharmacological and neurocomputational approaches.

The effects of dopamine on digit span in Parkinson’s disease
BACKGROUND Parkinson's disease patients are at an elevated risk of developing cognitive impairment. Although cognitive impairment is one of the strongest predictors of quality of life, dopaminergic anti-parkinsonian medications are designed to target motor symptoms. However, there is substantial evidence that dopamine also impacts cognition, in particular working memory. It is therefore critica...
متن کاملEffects of PPP1R1B (DARPP-32) Polymorphism on Feedback-Related Brain Potentials Across the Life Span
Maximizing gains during probabilistic reinforcement learning requires the updating of choice - outcome expectations at the time when the feedback about a specific choice or action is given. Extant theories and evidence suggest that dopaminergic modulation plays a crucial role in reinforcement learning and the updating of choice - outcome expectations. Furthermore, recently a positive component ...
متن کاملHydroethanolic extract of Carthamus tinctorius induces antidepressant-like effects: modulation by dopaminergic and serotonergic systems in tail suspension test in mice
Objective(s): Studies indicate that major deficiency in the levels of monoaminergic transmitters is a reason for severe depression. On the other hand, it is shown that Carthamus tinctorius L. (CT) may improve neuropsychological injuries by regulation of the monoamine transporter action. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the involvement of monoaminergic systems in antidepressan...
متن کاملAnimal Foraging and the Evolution of Goal-Directed Cognition
Foraging- and feeding-related behaviors across eumetazoans share similar molecular mechanisms, suggesting the early evolution of an optimal foraging behavior called area-restricted search (ARS), involving mechanisms of dopamine and glutamate in the modulation of behavioral focus. Similar mechanisms in the vertebrate basal ganglia control motor behavior and cognition and reveal an evolutionary p...
متن کاملLife-span plasticity of the brain and cognition: from questions to evidence and back.
Experience-related changes induced by modification of environment, physical exercise, or cognitive training affect brain structure and function. Research on brain plasticity and its relationship to experiential changes gathers momentum and attracts significant public interest. This collection of papers is based on presentation at the First International Conference on Life-Span Plasticity of Bra...
