Minimal Cost WDM SONET Rings
نویسندگان
چکیده
Minimal cost networks are presented when SONET UPSR and BLSR networks are deployed over a WDM fiber ring. The primary cost is the number of SONET ADMs, and a secondary cost is the number of wavelengths. The networks have been designed assuming a nonstatistical traffic model, and guarantees no blocking of traffic. Three network architectures are given that have low ADM costs. It is shown that networks that allow traffic to be cross-connected have lower ADM costs than those that do not, and that BLSR can lead to lower costs than UPSR. © 2000 SPIE/Baltzer Science Publishers 1388 6916/2000 $15.00 Docu-Sasaki 28-08-2000 20:20 Pagina 1

Cost-Effective Approaches for Circuit Construction in WDM SONET Rings
High speed SONET rings are widely used as network infrastructure. In WDM/SONET rings, the SONET add/drop multiplexers (SADMs) can significantly increase the overall system cost. By traffic grooming, the number of SADMs as well as the number of wavelengths required can be reduced dramatically. Generally, traffic grooming includes two parts: circuit construction and circuit grooming. Efficient ci...

This paper considers grooming of low speed traf-c into high speed lightpaths in a WDM based optical ring with a primary goal of reducing the cost of the entire system, which is dominated by the cost of the SONET transmission equipment connected to the optical ring. The paper attempts to enumerate the architectural options provided by SONET to arrive at a cost-eeective solution, including UPSR a...

Most of today's optical networks are built on E:ONET rings [I]. Using WDM technology, multiple rings can be sup ported on a single fiber ring [3]. In this architecture, each wavelength independently carries a SONET ring. Each SONET ring can further support multiple low speed streams (e.g. an OC48 SONET ring can support 4 OC-12 or 16 OC-3 streams at the same time). At each node a WDM Add/Drop Mu...
متن کاملPractical Traffic Grooming Scheme for Single-Hub SONET/WDM Rings
In SONET/WDM networks, one fiber supports multiple wavelengths and each wavelength supports several low rate tributary streams. ‘Traffic grooming’ then is defined as properly using SONET Add/Drop Multiplexer to electronically multiplex and demultiplex required tributary traffic patterns with minimal resource cost (wavelengths and ADMs). This paper studies traffic grooming problem in single hub ...
متن کاملWavelength Assignment to Minimize the Number of SONET ADMs in WDM Rings
Optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) rings are being deployed to support SONET/SDH self-healing rings. The cost of such a system is dominated by the SONET Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADMs). To minimize the system cost, algorithms must be developed to assign wavelengths to lightpaths in the system so that the number of ADMs required is minimized. This problem of optimal wavelength assignmen...
