Separable fluorous ionic liquids for the dissolution and saccharification of cellulose

چکیده
Cellulose (medium cotton linters, C6288) was from Sigma Chemical (St. Louis, MO). Other commercial chemicals were of reagent grade or better and were used without further purification. FluoroFlash fluorous silica gel was from Aldrich Chemical (Milwaukee, WI). The term “concentrated under reduced pressure” refers to the removal of solvents and other volatile materials using a rotary evaporator at water aspirator pressure (<20 torr) while maintaining the water-bath temperature below 50 °C unless noted otherwise. The term “high vacuum” refers to vacuum (<0.1 torr) achieved by a mechanical belt-drive oil pump. NMR spectra were acquired with a Bruker DMX-400 Avance spectrometer (H, 400 MHz; C, 100.6 MHz) at the National Magnetic Resonance Facility at Madison (NMRFAM). NMR spectra were acquired at ambient temperature unless indicated otherwise. Mass spectrometry was performed with a Micromass LCT (electrospray ionization, ESI) in the Mass Spectrometry Facility in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Effects of polarity, hydrophobicity, and density of ionic liquids on cellulose solubility.
We have synthesised novel ionic liquids (ILs) to show both cellulose dissolution ability and LCST-type phase transition after mixing with water. To realise both polar and hydrophobic properties, tetraalkylphosphonium cations and a series of carboxylate anions were employed to assume hydrophobic and highly polar properties, respectively. Effects of their alkyl chain length on the water compatibi...

Ionic liquids have been employed to deconstruct and fractionate lignocellulosic biomasses because of their capacity to dissolve cellulose. However, there is limited literature reporting the use of ionic liquids in biomass saccharification, which mostly involves the addition of acid or water that conceals the true action of ionic liquid in saccharification. This article assesses the performance ...
متن کاملEfficiency of Ionic Liquids in the Dissolution of Rice Husk
Ionic liquids that dissolve cellulose provide an option to pretreat lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, potential application of three ionic liquids in pretreating rice husk and their abilities in dissolving rice husk cellulose were investigated. The ionic liquids applied were 1-butyl-3methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]OAc), and 1-ethyl-3-meth...
متن کاملEffects of cationic structure on cellulose dissolution in ionic liquids: a molecular dynamics study.
In recent years, great progress has been made in the dissolution of cellulose with ionic liquids (ILs). However, the mechanism of cellulose dissolution, especially the role the IL cation played in the dissolution process, has not been clearly understood. Herein, the mixtures of cellulose with a series of imidazolium-based chloride ionic liquids and 1-butyl-3-methyl pyridinium chloride ([C(4)mpy...
