Ogg, James E. (Colorado State University, Fort Collins) and Ronald D. Humphrey. Small-cell segregants from a possibly homozygous diploid strain of Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 85:801-807. 1963.-Evidence was presented to show that a homozygous possibly diploid strain of Escherichia coli, when grown in a chemically defined medium under the conditions described in this report, will yield small-cell segregants that have haploid characteristics. The segregants have one-half as much deoxyribonucleic acid per cell as the diploid, give exponential survival curves when exposed to X rays, and have fermentative characteristics similar to the original haploid parent strain of the homozygous diploid strain. No detectable changes in surface antigens were associated with the segregation phenomenon. The haploidlike segregants can be converted to the diploid radiation-resistant state by growing them in the presence of camphor vapors.

A Stable Partial Diploid Strain of Escherichia Coli.
N 1949, LEDERBERG reported the discovery of an unusual partial diploid strain I in Escherichia coli K-12. Later studies (LEDERBERG, LEDERBERG, ZINDER and LIVELY 195 1 ; LEDERBERG 1951 ) with other partial diploid strains revealed that reduction to the haploid state always occurred in one step and at a high rate ( 5 to 10 percent per bacterium per generation). Recombination with retention of the...
متن کاملSegregation into and replication of plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid in chromosomeless segregants of Escherichia coli.
The progeny cells of Escherichia coli strain P678-54, which normally do not contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), were found to carry DNA when the parental cell carried colicin factor E1 (Col E1). The DNA found in the normally DNA-less segregants was shown to be Col E1 DNA, which is present primarily as a covalently closed circular molecule that can undergo more than one complete cycle of replic...
متن کاملThe Inhibitory Effects of Static Magnetic Field on Escherichia coli from two Different Sources at Short Exposure Time
This study was intended to investigate the effectiveness of static magnetic field on the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) provided from two sources, the urine samples of patients with urinary tract infections and the reference strain E. coli ATCC 25922. Bacterial samples in Nutrient Broth were subjected to a range of magnetic intensities (2, 4, 6, 9, 14, 16, 18, and 20 mT) at various exposu...
متن کاملProbiotic Bacteria and their Supernatants Protect Enterocyte Cell Lines from Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) Invasion
Probiotic microorganisms have attracted a growing interest for prevention and therapy of gastrointestinal disorders. Many probiotic strains have been shown to inhibit growth and metabolic activity of enteropathogenic bacteria as well as their adhesion and invasion to intestinal cells. In the present study, we evaluated the interference of bacteria-free supernatants (BFS) of cultures belonging t...

Objective(s): This study was designed to determine the relationship of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli isolates in multispecies biofilms and their individual phenotypic characters in biofilm consortia. Materials and Methods: The subject isolates were recovered from different food samples and identified on the basis of growth on differential and selective med...
