Antimicrobial resistance in bacteria causing ventilator-associated pneumonia in a tertiary care hospital: one year prospective study

چکیده
Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) is the most common infection diagnosed in intensive care units (ICUs). VAP is defined as pneumonia that occurs 48 hours or more after endotracheal intubation or tracheostomy, caused by infectious agents not present or incubating at the time mechanical ventilation was started. 1 It can be of two types. Early-onset VAP, defined as occurring within the first 4 days of mechanical ventilation, usually carries a better prognosis, and is more likely to be caused by antibiotic sensitive bacteria. Late onset VAP occuring 5 days or more after mechanical ventilation is more likely to be caused by multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens, and is associated with increased patient mortality and morbidity. 2 The specific microbial causes of VAP are many and varied. Gram negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter spp and enteric gram negative rods are implicated in 55-85% of VAP cases. High rates of ABSTRACT

Background and purpose: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the major factors of mortality and morbidity in Intensive care units (ICUS), especially in open-heart surgery patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate VAP in open-heart surgery patients admitted to the ICU in Sari Fatemeh Zahra Hospital, 2017-2019. Materials and methods: In this retrospective descriptive cros...

Background Choosing a unique empiric treatment for ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) can be challenging. We aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the only referral pediatric hospital in Isfahan in order to design the optimal empiric treatment protocol. متن کاملAntimicrobial use, incidence, etiology and resistance patterns in bacteria causing ventilator-associated pneumonia in a clinical-surgical intensive care unit.
INTRODUCTION Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing threat in hospitalized patients, and inappropriate empirical antimicrobial therapy is known to adversely affect outcomes in ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). The aim of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial usage, incidence, etiology, and antimicrobial resistance trends for prominent nosocomial pathogens causing ventilator-associate...

INTRODUCTION Nosocomial pneumonia associated with use of mechanical ventilators is one of the greatest challenges confronted by intensivists worldwide. The literature associates several bacteria with this type of infection; most common in intensive care units are Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and some of the Enterobacteriaceae famil...

BACKGROUNDS & OBJECTIVE Antimicrobial resistance is a major health problem worldwide in hospitals. The main contributing factors are exposures to broad-spectrum antimicrobials and cross-infections. Understanding the extent and type of antimicrobial use in tertiary care hospitals will aid in developing national antimicrobial stewardship priorities. METHODS In this study, we have analyzed the a...
