Chloroquine-Resistant Malaria in Travelers Returning from Haiti after 2010 Earthquake

چکیده
We investigated chloroquine sensitivity to Plasmodium falciparum in travelers returning to France and Canada from Haiti during a 23-year period. Two of 19 isolates obtained after the 2010 earthquake showed mixed pfcrt 76K+T genotype and high 50% inhibitory concentration. Physicians treating malaria acquired in Haiti should be aware of possible chloroquine resistance.

Subacute clinical forms of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in travelers receiving chloroquine-proguanil prophylaxis.
We have observed 4 French travelers, returning from African countries, who were not immune to malaria and were receiving chloroquine-proguanil prophylaxis, in whom the diagnosis of malaria could easily have been missed because the clinical signs were uncommon. These cases suggest that chloroquine-proguanil prophylaxis is not always effective and that travelers with unexplained symptoms should b...
متن کاملFailure of atovaquone/proguanil to prevent Plasmodium ovale malaria in traveler returning from Cameroon.
We report a case of a patient returning from Cameroon who developed Plasmodium ovale malaria, despite atovaquone/proguanil (AP, Malarone) prophylaxis, which is widely used for the prevention of chloroquine-resistant malaria. AP is indeed active only on schizont blood forms of P. ovale but not against liver-stage hypnozoites and does not realize effective prophylaxis against delayed onset of P. ...
متن کاملLack of Evidence for Chloroquine-Resistant Plasmodium falciparum Malaria, Leogane, Haiti
Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Haiti is considered chloroquine susceptible, although resistance transporter alleles associated with chloroquine resistance were recently detected. Among 49 patients with falciparum malaria, we found neither parasites carrying haplotypes associated with chloroquine resistance nor instances of chloroquine treatment failure. Continued vigilance to detect emergence...
متن کاملPlasmodium falciparum K76T pfcrt Gene Mutations and Parasite Population Structure, Haiti, 2006–2009
Hispaniola is the only Caribbean island to which Plasmodium falciparum malaria remains endemic. Resistance to the antimalarial drug chloroquine has rarely been reported in Haiti, which is located on Hispaniola, but the K76T pfcrt (P. falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter) gene mutation that confers chloroquine resistance has been detected intermittently. We analyzed 901 patient samples ...
متن کاملA Molecular Surveillance System for Global Patterns of Drug Resistance in Imported Malaria
Analysis of imported malaria in travelers may represent a novel surveillance system for drug-resistant malaria. We analyzed consecutive falciparum malaria isolates from Canadian travelers from 1994 to 2000, for polymorphisms in pfcrt, dhfr, and dhps linked to chloroquine and pyrimethamine/sulfadoxine resistance. Forty percent of isolates possessed the K76 pfcrt allele, suggesting that many impo...
