چکیده

An intense cold-atom beam source based on a modified pyramidal magneto-optical trap has been developed and characterized. We have produced a slow beam of cold cesium atoms with a continuous flux of 2.2 3 109 atoms/s at a mean velocity of 15 m/s and with a divergence of 15 mrad. The corresponding radiant intensity is 1.2 3 1013 atom s21 sr21. We have characterized the performance of our beam source over a range of operating conditions, and the measured values for atom flux, mean velocity, and divergence are in good agreement with results from detailed Monte Carlo numerical simulations. © 2003 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 140.3320, 020.7010.

Experimental study of nonlinear focusing in a magneto-optical trap using a Z-scan technique

We present an experimental study of Z-scan measurements of the nonlinear response of cold Cs atoms in a magneto-optical trap. Numerical simulations of the Z-scan signal accounting for the nonuniform atomic density agree with experimental results at large probe beam detunings. At small probe detunings a spatially varying radiation force modifies the Z-scan signal. We also show that the measured ...

Loading of a cold atomic beam into a magnetic guide

We discuss recent experimental progress on the realization of a commonly called continuous atom laser. We demonstrate experimentally the continuous and pulsed loading of a slow and cold atomic beam into a magnetic guide. The slow beam is produced using a vapor loaded laser trap, which ensures two-dimensional magneto-optical trapping, as well as cooling by a moving molasses along the third direc...

A compact magneto-optical trap apparatus for calcium

We present a compact apparatus for laser cooling and trapping of atomic calcium. The set-up consisting of a Zeeman-slowed thermal beam and a magneto-optical trap (MOT) has potential use for studying optical lattices, optical clocks, sensitive trace analysis, ultra-cold collisions and the feasibility of achieving quantum degeneracy in an alkaline earth element. Construction of the apparatus is d...

[hal-00796203, v1] Fabrication of Magneto-Optical Atom Traps on a Chip

Ultra-cold atoms can be manipulated using microfabricated devices known as atom chips. These have significant potential for applications in sensing, metrology and quantum information processing. To date, the chips are loaded by transfer of atoms from an external, macroscopic magneto-optical trap (MOT) into microscopic traps on the chip. This transfer involves a series of steps, which complicate...

Trapping a single atom in a blue detuned optical bottle beam trap.

We demonstrate trapping a single rubidium atom in a blue detuned optical bottle beam trap. The trap was formed by a strongly focused blue detuned laser beam, which passes through a computer-generated circular pi phase hologram displayed on a spatial light modulator. Single atoms were loaded from a magneto-optical trap and stored in the optical trap for several seconds.
