Variation in Bud Exudate Composition of Populus nigra Assessed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

چکیده
Bud exudates from twelve clones o f Populus nigra originating from seven countries were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the principal compounds identified. Specimens o f P. nigra var betulifolia differed in bud exudate composition from the other speci mens analyzed, and were more similar in exudate composition to P. deltoides than were the other specimens. The range o f bud exudate composition was greater than that which would be expected to occur within a single coherent species.

Relation of “Antimicrobial” Compounds Present in Poplar Bud Exudate to Disease Resistance by Poplars
Bud exudates from 9 poplars showing a range o f resistance to bacterial canker and poplar rust were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the components o f the bud exudate identified. Those compounds previously reported in the literature to have notable antimicrobial activity were listed and the quantities present in the bud exudates o f the speci mens analyzed were compared. N...
متن کاملIdentification by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry of 150 Compounds in Propolis
Propolis is the substance used by bees as a draught excluder and general purpose sealer for their hives. It usually consists of a mixture of pop lar bud exudate and beeswax [1]. Propolis balsam (a 70% alcohol extract of propolis which contains the bud exudate components) is a popular herbal medicine [2-4] containing a number of phenolic constituents with antimicrobial activity [4-6], Bees appe...

Unintended changes in plant physiology, anatomy and metabolism as a result of genetic engineering are a concern as more transgenic plants are commercially deployed in the ecosystem. We compared the cell wall chemical composition of three Populus lines (Populus trichocarpa Torr. & A. Gray x Populus trichocarpa Bartr. ex Marsh., Populus trichocarpa x Populus nigra L. and Populus deltoides x Popul...
متن کاملComposition of Propolis in Oxfordshire, U.K. and its Relation to Poplar Bud Exudate
Propolis is a mixture of wax, sugars and plant exudates used by bees as a general purpose glue and sealant within hives. There is a long history of medicinal usage of propolis although propolis can cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals [1, 2]. Various components of propolis have been assessed for their antimicrobial properties [3—7], Components identified as having antimicrobial p...
متن کاملMandibular Gland Secretions as Alarm Pheromones in Two Species of the Desert Ant Cataglyphis
Mandibular gland secretion o f two Cataglyphis species were chemically analyzed by combined gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The exudates produced by C. bom bycina consisted of citronellol and geraniol while that of C. nigra contained only geraniol. The reaction of both species to the glandular secretions was alarm and recruitment. While the reaction of C. bom bycina was strong, that of C....
