Distribution of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Egg Masses and Larvae on Sweet Corn in New York

چکیده
Environ. Entomol. 15: 501-506 (1986) ABSTRACT Studies were conducted in commercial sweet corn fields in upstate New York to collect information for developing a sampling protocol for egg masses and larvae of European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner). Information was collected on 1) aggregation of populations in portions of the field (e.g., aggregation along borders), 2) distribution of sample observations for a whole-plant sample unit, and 3) distribution of insectswithin the sample unit (i.e., the within-plant distribution of eggs and larvae). Analyses of data indicated that distribution of egg massesand larvae throughout a fieldwas essentially random with no evidence to support the hypothesis that eggs were preferentially laid near field borders where mating and resting of female adults occurred. From data on dispersion of ECB on individual plants, a Poisson series is a reasonable model for characterizing distribution of ECB egg masses. Parameters of a variance-mean model for the small larvae indicate that these larvae are highly aggregated but that aggregation becomes less pronounced as larvae mature. Since control measures are most effective against egg massesand small larvae, a sampling protocol that utilizes characteristics of both stages should be employed. An index of ovipositional activity measured via incidence of egg masses on plants can be determined by inspecting plants for presence of either egg masses or small larvae. This can be accomplished by using a binomial-based sequential sampling plan.

Evaluating popcorn as a potential refuge of Ostrinia nubilalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).
Popcorn was evaluated in a series of experiments conducted over four growing seasons for its potential as a refuge for European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner). Objectives of these studies were to determine whether more larvae were produced in popcorn than in field corn and to determine how popcorn influenced female oviposition and larval distribution in neighboring field corn. Two vari...

Efficacy of thiamethoxam (Cruiser) and imidacloprid (Gaucho) were evaluated as seed treatments for controlling European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) and Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) larvae in stored grain. At approximately 22-26 degrees C, all fifth instar European corn borers died after two or 4 d of exposure to corn treated with 250 and 500 ppm thiamethoxam, resp...

J. E. Smith); and corn earworm, Heliothts zea (Boddie), during 1982 and 1983. In both years, boring injury caused by O. nubilalts was...

European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), is a major pest of processing snap bean because larvae are contaminants in pods. The incidence of O. nubilalis-contaminated beans has become uncommon in New York, possibly because widespread adoption of Bt field corn has suppressed populations. Snap bean fields located where Bt corn has been intensively grown in space and time may be at lower ri...
