چکیده

Background: The consequences of hybridization vary depending on the fitness of hybrids and pure species plants. Herbivory and fungal infection may affect fitness and often differ in their effect on hybrid versus pure-species genotypes. Questions: Do herbivory and fungal infection rates differ between pure species and hybrids? What is the underlying genetic basis of resistance to herbivory and fungal infection? Study system: Two ecologically similar species of Louisiana Iris: I. brevicaulis and I. fulva, and their F1 and first-generation backcross hybrids. Methods: Mammalian herbivory (macroherbivory), insect herbivory (microherbivory), and fungal infection were assayed in an experimental plot of 930 irises, including pure species and three hybrid classes planted in native Louisiana Iris habitat in the Atchafalaya swamp of southern Louisiana. Results: Macroherbivory rates were low in the field plot and did not differ significantly between crosstypes. Microherbivory and fungal infection rates differed significantly between crosstypes. Microhervibory did not differ significantly between the pure species plants and was lower than expected in one backcross class. The fungus Puccinia iridis infected one F1 hybrid class at significantly greater rates than all other experimental crosstypes. Backcross hybrids towards I. brevicaulis were also infected by P. iridis at rates intermediate between the highly infected F1 class and its recurrent parent, suggesting a pattern of underdominance for resistance traits in the F1.

HYBRIDS AND IRIS Hybridization, hybrid fitness and the evolution of adaptations

This review focuses on two related outcomes of hybridization sensu lato (i.e. findings from both natural and experimental hybrids are discussed): (1) the production of hybrid genotypes with various fitnesses, and (2) the origin/transfer of adaptations in the Louisiana Iris species complex. Since effects on fitness, and the origin or transfer of adaptations, are of fundamental evolutionary impor...

Title: Detecting Adaptive Trait Introgression between Iris fulva and Iris brevicaulis in highly-selective field conditions

The idea that natural hybridization has served as an important force in evolutionary and adaptive diversification has gained considerable momentum in recent years. By combining genome analyses with a highly-selective field experiment, we provide evidence for adaptive trait introgression between two naturally hybridizing Louisiana Iris species, flood-tolerant Iris fulva and dry-adapted Iris brev...

Characterization of high-copy-number retrotransposons from the large genomes of the louisiana iris species and their use as molecular markers.

The Louisiana iris species Iris brevicaulis and I. fulva are morphologically and karyotypically distinct yet frequently hybridize in nature. A group of high-copy-number TY3/gypsy-like retrotransposons was characterized from these species and used to develop molecular markers that take advantage of the abundance and distribution of these elements in the large iris genome. The copy number of thes...

Genetic mapping of species boundaries in Louisiana irises using IRRE retrotransposon display markers.

Genetic mapping studies provide insight into the pattern and extent of genetic incompatibilities affecting hybridization between closely related species. Genetic maps of two species of Louisiana Irises, Iris fulva and I. brevicaulis, were constructed from transposon-based molecular markers segregating in reciprocal backcross (BC1) interspecific hybrids and used to investigate genomic patterns o...
