Retrieving Canopy Structure from Hyperspectral Multi- Angular Satellite Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
The angular dependence of satellite-measured canopy reflectance has been shown to contain information on the structure of vegetated surfaces. The aim of the research was to explore the angular variability of spectral indices and to compare the suitability of angular indices and traditional vegetation indices for retrieval of forest structural attributes using Chris/PROBA data. With spruce the largest variability in NDVI occured in forward scattering direction. This variability strongly determined the correlations with canopy attributes. The results showed that off-nadir viewing improved NDVI performance considerably, particularly in forward scattering direction. The best relationship was found between NDVI at 44o view zenith angle and stand age (spruce: r= – 0.91, beech: r= – 0.77). Other directional indices (ANIX, NDAX or NDVIHD) were in most cases less correlated with canopy attributes.

Comparing Three Canopy Reflectance Models with Hyperspectral Multi-angular Satellite Data
Studies that compare modelled reflectances with satellite-measured reflectances for different wavelengths and view angles are still rare. We compared model outputs from three different canopy reflectance models (SLC, FRT and INFORM) with satellite measured reflectances (Chris/PROBA). Comparison of the simulated directional reflectances reveals general agreement but also some differences among t...
متن کاملAssimilation of Hyperspectral Multi-directional Chris-data in a Coupled Radiative Transfer and Crop Growth Model
Spatially distributed information on canopy parameters is an important input to precision agriculture. Remote sensing data, and especially high-resolution hyperspectral data of sensors such as the multi-directional satellite-sensor CHRIS or the airborne spectrometer AVIS provide such information. In order to derive the canopy parameters leaf area index and fraction of mature material as well as...
متن کاملAssessment of Canopy Structure and Heterogeneity from Multi-angular CHRIS-PROBA Data
The spaceborne ESA-mission CHRIS-PROBA (Compact High Resolution Imaging SpectrometerProject for On-board Autonomy) provides hyperspectral and multi-angular data of selected terrestrial targets (Barnsley et al. 2004). For vegetated surfaces, the spectral information content of CHRIS data may yield the biochemical and biophysical properties of a vegetation canopy, while the directional component ...
متن کاملAnalyses of Hyperspectral and Directional Chris Data for Agricultural Monitoring Using a Canopy Reflectance Model
Agricultural monitoring using a canopy reflectance model through analyses of hyperspectral and directional CHRIS data is targeted. CHRIS data of the Upper Rhine Valley test-site (Germany) were destriped and geometrically corrected, so that the 5 angular observations can be compared. An atmospherical correction was performed that uses the radiative transfer model MODTRAN 4. An extended version o...
