A Centering Dynamics Approach to Zero Pronouns in Korean*

چکیده
Kim, Mi-Kyung. 2003. A Centering Dynamics Approach to Zero Pronouns in Korean. Discourse and Cognition 10.3, 57-73. This study examines 249 utterances from a corpus of newspaper articles, focusing on the distribution of zero subjects and zero objects. Two kinds of approach, centering theory in Grosz et al. (1995) and centering dynamics in Kameyama (1996, 1998), are compared to find out which approach is more general to explain the distribution of zeros in Korean texts. At first, this study analyzes the data based on centering theory in Grosz et al. (1995) and finds out that this approach is defective in two respects. One is that the occurrence of zeros is not only closely related with CONTINUE transitions but also fairly related with SMOOTH-SHIFT transitions. The other is that the occurrence of zero objects is not explained based on centering transitions. As an alternative approach, this study re-examines the distribution of zeros based on Kameyama's centering dynamics, and concludes that centering dynamics is more general in that it can cover the defects of centering theory. In addition, it is maintained that the distribution of zero objects can be explained based on the notion of Parallelism Preference. (Daeduk College)

Semantic Resolution of Zero and Pronoun Anaphors in Korean Paper Title
In this study, we apply Walker et al.’s (1994) centering account of Japanese zero elements to Korean correspondents, and we evaluate whether their analysis provides the correct interpretation of zeros. We investigate whether Korean pronouns and zeros are treated as the same sort of entities during semantic interpretation. In a psycholinguistics experiment, we test Walker et al. (1994) by compar...
متن کاملZero Pronoun Resolution in Thai: A Centering Approach
Since pronouns can be dropped in Thai, a natural language processing system for Thai must be able to resolve referents of the missing pronouns. One of several approaches that have been used for reference resolution is Centering Theory. Centering Theory is a focusing process in which salience of discourse entities is being kept track of. Referents of pronouns or zero pronouns are usually entitie...
متن کاملA Corpus Study of Zero Pronouns in Hindi: An Account Based on Centering Transition Preferences
This paper presents a corpus-based investigation of the use of zero pronouns in Hindi. After establishing that the antecedents of these null arguments cannot be recovered syntactically (Rizzi, 1982; Jaeggli & Safir, 1989), I propose an account in terms of "Centering Theory" (Grosz et al., 1995). Given the Hindi-specific centering constraints proposed in Prasad & Strube (2000), I argue that the ...
متن کاملApproaches To Japanese Zero Pronouns: Centering And Relevance
Accessibility of candidate referents is a crucial factor in successful reference assignment and this intuition has been adequately accommodated and developed in centering theory. By contrast, another equally important factor involved in reference assignment, namely, accessibili ty of contextual assumptions, seems to have not been addressed fully as a part of a computational theory of reference....
متن کاملOn the Discourse Analysis in Korean Dialogues
The purpose of the paper is twofold. First, we revise the well-known Centering Theory of anaphora resolution and propose the Controlled Information Packaging Theory (CIPT, for short). Second, we suggest a solution to the resolution of the antecedents of pronouns within the framework of CIPT. For this purpose, we select a dialogue of hotel reservation as a domain-restricted discourse, and discus...
