چکیده

Introduction: Vertical transmission of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is not commonly reported in literature. Although rare, it is one of the leading causes of HCV infection in early childhood. Coinfection of HCV with Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV) has been frequently associated with enhanced vertical transmission of HCV. Case presentation: We present the case of a lady found positive for HCV/HIV coinfection, who delivered a male infant retaining HCV infection. Detailed examination of the infant revealed the possible acquisition of HCV from the infected mother. During the prolonged follow up session of 22 months, laboratory reports of the infant indicated signs of persistant HCV infection. Conclusion: The study highlights the vertical transmission of HCV subtype 1a in HCV/HIV coinfected patient. It emphasize the consideration of effective management guidelines such as pre-conception antiHCV screening for better treatment possibilities and the need of effective treatment regimens for prospective mothers during pregnancy to minimize the chances of HCV transmission to expected child.
