چکیده

[1] The coda of seismic waves consists of that part of the signal after the directly arriving phases. In a finite medium, or in one that is strongly heterogeneous, the coda is dominated by waves which have repeatedly sampled the medium. Small changes in a medium which may have no detectable influence on the first arrivals are amplified by this repeated sampling and may thus be detectable in the coda. We refer to this use of multiple-sampling coda waveforms as coda wave interferometry. We have exploited ultrasonic coda waves to monitor time-varying rock properties in a laboratory environment. We have studied the dependence of velocity on uniaxial stress in Berea sandstone, the temperature dependence of velocity in granite and in aluminum, and the change in velocity due to an increase of water saturation in sandstone. There are many other possible applications of coda wave interferometry in geophysics, including dam and volcano monitoring, time-lapse reservoir characterization, earthquake relocation, and stress monitoring in mining and rock physics.

Time-lapse travel time change of multiply scattered acoustic waves

Existing techniques in correlation spectroscopy, such as coda wave interferometry and diffusing acoustic wave spectroscopy, determine the average motion of scatterers or change in the propagation velocity from the temporal change of multiply scattered sound. However, neither of them gives an indication of the spatial extent of the change in the medium. This study is an extension of the techniqu...

Monitoring a Building Using Deconvolution Interferometry. I: Earthquake-Data Analysis

For health monitoring of a building, we need to separate the response of the building to an earthquake from the imprint of soil-structure coupling and from wave propagation below the base of the building. Seismic interferometry based on deconvolution, where we deconvolve the wave fields recorded at different floors, is a technique to extract this building response and thus estimate velocity of ...

Monitoring change in volcanic interiors using coda wave interferometry: Application to Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

[1] Multiply scattered waves are a new tool for monitoring changes in the earth’s subsurface. In this study we use the air pressure and displacement recorded at the Arenal Volcano to detect temporal changes. The pressure pulses emitted by the volcano are associated with a complex displacement signal of overlapping coda waves. By deconvolving the ground motion with the air pressure for different...

Time-lapse Monitoring with Multiply Scattered Waves

Previous formulations of coda wave interferometry make it possible to assess the average change of the medium, but they do not allow for the spatial localization of this change (Snieder et al., 2002; Snieder, 2002). We present an approach for localizing temporal changes in the medium using strongly scattered waves, and test it with numerical models for 2D scalar waves. Using an integral represe...

The theory of coda wave interferometry

Coda waves are sensitive to changes in the subsurface because the strong scattering that generates these waves causes coda waves to repeatedly sample a limited region of space. Coda wave interferometry is a technique that exploits this sensitivity to estimate weak changes in the medium from a comparison of the coda waves before and after the perturbation. Here I present the general theory of co...
