Unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis and Erb's palsy in the newborn.

چکیده
Since Naunyn reported the first case of unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis in a newborn infant in 1902, 38 further cases have been described; 72% showed an association with Erb's palsy on the same side as the phrenic injury. As most cases have occurred after breech delivery, the majority of observers considered the injury to result from manipulations of the head and neck producing overstretching of the cervical nerves. Rupilius (1934), however, believed that malposition of the foetus in utero allowed compression of the brachial plexus and phrenic nerve between the clavicle, the first rib, and the transverse processes of the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae. The present case showed avulsion of the anterior roots of the cervical nerves supplying the phrenic nerve on the affected side indicating that trauma by traction had occurred at birth.

Oberlin partial ulnar nerve transfer for restoration in obstetric brachial plexus palsy of a newborn: case report
An 8 month old male infant with Erb's birth palsy was treated with two peripheral nerve transfers. Except for rapid motor reinnervations, elbow flexion was obtained by an Oberlin's partial ulnar nerve transfer, while shoulder abduction was restored by an accessory-to-suprascapular nerve transfer. The initial contraction of the biceps muscle occurred two months after surgery. Forty months after ...

Unilateral paralysis of the diaphragm, not the result of a deliberate operative procedure, is uncommon. It may have a variety of causes, but so far as I am aware pneumonia* has never previously been included amongst them. The commoner causes of unilateral paralysis are diseases of the cervical spinal cord affecting the anterior horn cells of the fourth segment, such as poliomyelitis, tumour, pr...
متن کاملDiaphragmatic paralysis associated with neonatal brachial plexus palsy.
Phrenic nerve palsy can occur in the context of neonatal brachial plexus palsy, yet neither outcomes nor definitive treatment guidelines have been established. Diaphragmatic paralysis alone in the newborn results in significant respiratory sequelae and failure to thrive. Reviewing the available literature revealed little information about the incidence of phrenic nerve palsy associated with neo...
متن کاملEarly Surgical Intervention for Diaphragmatic Paralysis in a Neonate; Report of a Case and Literature Review
BACKGROUND Diaphragmatic paralysis in newborns is related to brachial plexus palsy. It can cause respiratory failure necessitating prolonged mechanical ventilation and subsequent extubation failure. CASE PRESENTATION We present a two-hour-old male newborn with a birth weight of 4500 grams who had a right-sided brachial plexus palsy and right diaphragmatic paralysis due to shoulder dystocia. H...

Background: Acquired paralysis of the diaphragm is a condition caused by trauma, surgical injuries, (lung cancer surgery, esophageal surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery), and is sometimes of an unknown etiology. It can lead to dyspnea and can affect ventilatory function and patients activity. Diaphragmatic plication is a treatment method which decreases inconsistent function of diaphragm...
