چکیده

The use of tunable lasers (TL) in dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) networks for optical switching, routing and networking has gained a lot of interest in recent years. Employment of such TLs as tunable transmitters in wavelength packet switched (WPS) networks is one of the possible applications of these devices. In such systems, the information to be transmitted could be encoded onto a destination dependent wavelength and the routing of traffic could be performed on a packet-by-packet basis. The authors investigate the possibility of using TLs in DWDM WPS networks by focusing on the characterisation of the instantaneous frequency drift of a TL due to wavelength tuning and direct modulation. Characterization of the linewidth of the TLs is also presented to verify the feasibility of using TLs in systems employing advanced

Development of ITLA Using a Full-Band Tunable Laser

With the explosive growth in the Internet traffic in recent years, capacity expansion of dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) systems is advancing, creating a need for implementation of flexible networks that can reconfigure themselves depending on traffic situations, and for cost reduction. For this reason, conventional distribution feedback (DFB) lasers with fixed wavelengths are rap...

Tunable twin-guide laser diodes for wide wavelength tuning at 1.55 Âμm [5594-14]

Widely tunable lasers are generally considered as key components of future optical communication networks. However, practically all widely tunable lasers that have been fabricated so far suffer from drawbacks, like elaborate calibration procedures that are required for each specific device, low output powers, and limited direct modulation capabilities. To overcome the aforementioned issues, the...

Implementation of Future Generation Agile Gigabits Passive Optical Network

This paper reviews the progress of the passive optical network, and discusses a viable means for the realisation of future generation agile gigabits passive optical networks, (GPONs) by the use of low cost narrow band tunable lasers and arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs). It projectes a twostage strategy for the realisation of future generation agile GPONs, i.e., the near-term Time and Wavelengt...
