چکیده

The virtual reality modeling language (VRML) [1] is quickly growing in use and popularity. VRML may help to push fast 3D graphics onto most desktops and into most homes within the next few years. But are people ready to browse virtual-worlds in the same way that they currently browse flatland web pages, and more importantly, are virtual-worlds and virtual-world browsers ready for people ? There are a number of unresolved problems in the field of threedimensional computer-human interaction, including the difficulties world travelers often have finding their way in large unfamiliar virtual environments. How can travelers best find their way to locations of interest and then find their way back to locations previously visited ? How should worlds and world browsers be designed to facilitate skilled wayfinding behavior ?

Navigating large virtual spaces

INTRODUCTION As important as navigation is to human performance in virtual worlds, support for effective navigation is often overlooked in the design process. This document reports an experiment intended to show that real-world wayfinding and environmental design principles are effective in designing virtual worlds which support skilled wayfinding behavior. The design principles are adapted fro...

Working Memory in Wayfinding - A Dual Task Experiment in a Virtual City

This study examines the working memory systems involved in human wayfinding. In the learning phase, 24 participants learned two routes in a novel photorealistic virtual environment displayed on a 220° screen while they were disrupted by a visual, a spatial, a verbal, or-in a control group-no secondary task. In the following wayfinding phase, the participants had to find and to "virtually walk" ...

Cognitive principles of schematisation for wayfinding assistance

People often need assistance to successfully perform wayfinding tasks in unfamiliar environments. Nowadays, a huge variety of wayfinding assistance systems exist. All these systems intend to present the needed information for a certain wayfinding situation in an adequate presentation. Some wayfinding assistance systems utilise findings for the field of cognitive sciences to develop and design c...

What about those ants? Swarm Intelligence for Virtual Environments

The use of 3D virtual worlds has spread rapidly in recent years. These worlds have various uses ranging from computer games to urban design simulation systems. However, the spread of 3D virtual worlds has been impeded due to the problem of users not being able to find their way in and around virtual worlds. Hence improving wayfinding has become a crucial area of research. As virtual worlds beco...

Wayfinding swarm creatures exploring the 3D dynamic virtual worlds

The use of 3D virtual worlds in the construction industry is not limited to simulation of building models. Whilst in a 3D virtual world, designers can view their work from various viewpoints by moving around. However explorations within these environments are not simple affairs due to the absence of many sensorial stimuli that exist in the physical world. Hence there needs to be a tool aiding d...
