چکیده

Lighting simulation is very important in realistic image synthesis, and the simulation of subsurface scattering has recently attracted much attention. Although the dipole/multipole model has succeeded in creating realistic images, it is still difficult to deal with volumetric features in subsurface scattering, which is important when rendering optically thin objects. This paper proposes a novel rendering method that utilizes the plane-parallel solution and the ray-marching method. The ray-marching method has been used to calculate single scattering solutions, and the plane-parallel solution has been adopted to calculate BRDFs. By combining these techniques, the proposed method efficiently captures volumetric features in multiple subsurface scattering events. In our experiments, the proposed method demonstrated a performance superior to that of previous methods in terms of accuracy.

Interactive Distributed Translucent Volume Rendering

Translucent volume rendering is a robust and efficient direct volume-rendering technique for capturing optical effects, like subsurface scattering, translucency, and volumetric shadows. However, due to the limited computing and memory resources of the recent consumer graphics hardware, high-resolution volume data can still hardly be interactively visualized by this method. In this paper we pres...

Accurate Graphical Representation of Plant Leaves

We present a simple and practical method for rendering leaves and other translucent parts of plants. In contrast to other translucent materials, plant leaves usually are thin, though highly textured. An adaptation of rendering methods for translucent materials in combination with a set of predefined textures allows us to represent plants realistically. A hardware-based approximation of the shad...

Real-time Rendering of Translucent Volumetric Surfaces

We present a real-time technique for rendering translucent features on opaque volumetric surfaces. It relies on modern reprogrammable graphics hardware to compute the complicated visual phenomena seen in translucent materials. The proposed technique is based on relief mapping techniques, and is therefore capable of interacting with the underlying opaque surface accurately. A hard self-shadowing...

Spatial Adjacency Maps for Translucency Simulation under General Illumination

Rendering translucent materials in real time is usually done by using surface diffusion and/or (translucent) shadow maps. The downsides of these approaches are, that surface diffusion cannot handle translucency effects that show up when rendering thin objects, and that translucent shadow maps are only available for point light sources. Furthermore, translucent shadow maps introduce limitations ...

Surface Curvature Effects on Reflectance from Translucent Materials

Most of the physically based techniques for rendering translucent objects use the diffusion theory of light scattering in turbid media. The widely used dipole diffusion model [JMLH01] applies the diffusion-theory formula derived for the planar surface to objects of arbitrary shapes. This paper presents first results of our investigation of how surface curvature affects the diffuse reflectance f...
