The probability that tweety is able to fly

چکیده

Consider the question of assigning a probabilistic valuation to a statement as "Tweety (a particular bird) is able to fly". We suggest that a natural way to proceed is to rewrite it as "a (randomly chosen) bird with the same observable properties of Tweety is able to fly", and consequently to assume that the probability of "Tweety is able to fly" is equal to the percentage of the past observed birds similar to Tweety that are able to fly. Note: A similar paper was published in the International Journal of Intelligent Systems, 9 (1994).

The new Tweety puzzle: arguments against monistic Bayesian approaches in epistemology and cognitive science

In this paper we discuss the new Tweety puzzle. The original Tweety puzzle was addressed by approaches in non-monotonic logic, which aim to adequately represent the Tweety case, namely that Tweety is a penguin and, thus, an exceptional bird, which cannot fly, although in general birds can fly. The new Tweety puzzle is intended as a challenge for probabilistic theories of epistemic states. In th...

Competing accounts of contrastive coherence

The proposition that Tweety is a bird coheres better with the proposition that Tweety has wings than with the proposition that Tweety cannot fly. This relationship of contrastive coherence is the focus of the present paper. Based on recent work in formal epistemology we consider various possibilities to model this relationship by means of probability theory. In a second step we consider differe...

An Analysis of First-Order Logics of Probability

We consider two approaches to giving semantics to first order logics of probability. The first approach puts a probability on the domain, and is appropriate for giving semantics to formulas involving statistical information such as "The probability that a (typical) bird flies is greater than .9." The second approach puts a probability on possible worlds, and is appropriate for giving semantics ...

Preferential Logics: the Predicate Calculus Case

Suppose a knowledge base contains information on how the world generally behaves and in particular contains the information that birds, normally fly. Suppose that we obtain the information that Tweety is a bird, why should we conclude that it is plausible that Tweety flies? The answer to this question is unexpectedly sophisticated since the obvious substitution rule has to be rejected. Our answ...

On the Tweety Penguin Triangle Problem

In this paper, one studies the famous well-known and challenging Tweety Penguin Triangle Problem (TPTP or TP2) pointed out by Judea Pearl in one of his books. We first present the solution of the TP2 based on the fallacious Bayesian reasoning and prove that reasoning cannot be used to conclude on the ability of the penguin-bird Tweety to fly or not to fly. Then we present in details the counter...
